A Personal Movie Review

I would love to give you my review, as a former collegiate miler and 5000 runner.

I saw both Prefontaine and Without Limits and would have to say that Without Limits was by far more realistic and moving.  First of all actor Billy Cudrup looked alot more like a runner than Jered Leto.  Donald Sutherland's portrayal of Bill Bowerman was awesome!  He not only looked the part but his imitation of Bowerman was so realistic and metaphoric.  Also, the other runners and extras were more realistic, as was the actual racing scenes.  This movie did a way better job in depicting the unusual but essential relationship of Bowerman and Pre.  The cinematography was also better along with the plot or direction of the movie, and Crudup did a better job of portraying Pre's personality, from all that I've read, learned or heard about Pre.

It was just an all around better quality film, comparing it to"Prefontaine"

Pre gives inspiration and determination

I just want to thank you for making this website.  It is good to inform others of what a hero Steve Prefontaine really was.

Everytime I run in a track meet I tape a picture of Prefontaine to my jersey.  He gives me inspiration and determination.

Feature story for class

I'm a student at Oregon State who has chosen to write a feature story about Pre for my final in a writing class. I found your web site (which is excellent) today and was wondering if I could do some type of phone or email interview with you about Pre.

California fan watches movie once per day

Thanks for putting up sites and detailing information regarding Pre.

To me he is a HUGE inspiration !!!

He and I have a lot in common.  I watch Without Limits at least once a day.  I have posters up all over - these items motivate me and make me realize what I have in life and I want to borrow that from Pre and pass it along to kids !

I am in California and one of my goals is to get up to Oregon to run where Pre ran.

What I am looking for is a t-shirt or something ... do you know how I can obtain a "GoPre" or "StopPre" t-shirt or anything like that?

My uncle ran track/cc during the late 60s and early 70s as well...(UTEP, Gary Mazziotti)

I look forward to hearing back from.

- Rick

[I've had a lot of requests for tee-shirts.  When I find out how to buy them, I'll put them on the website.]

Pre picture from 1970 NCAA race

I just found your site via tnfmedia.com. I noticed that you don't have a picture of Pre from his 1970 NCAA race. I just looked in my files and only one was printed in the Des Moines Register on June, 21, 1970. It isn't a great one but shows Steve looking behind him as he passes the scoreboard with about 150y to go. I haven't check my old T&FN but they probably have a much better ones.

"Amateurism" in track

I was transcribing an interview I did with Juris Luzins last summer and did a quick websearch on him, alighting on your page.  I enjoyed all of it, particularly the summer your ran for money in Europe.  I am a college student interested in professionalism / 'amateurism' in track and field, and wanted to know if you have any more material prepared on the topic.

Question about Pre from a Georgia HS runner

I'm a highschool runner in Dacula, Georgia. I've got several questions and comments.

Was "Pre" very popular among other athletes and students?? I'm just curious because I recently read the book and I've seen all the movies but they don't really get into his personal life. Was he always driven to succeed?  Like all about running 24/7?

Besides that, I think your website is an awesome "Pre" page and I know it must have been awesome to run with him, and know him..

- Bobby

[I won't go into detail here.  To answer the question ... Pre was very confident and "cocky".  Those that knew him usually had some extreme feelings of either liking him or disliking him. Obviously I liked him but I know people who still don't.  He was driven to succeed and Dellinger said that Pre was the only athlete he coached that never missed a workout;  even when he was sick or sore.  I believe his consistency in training is one of the things that made him a great runner.]

Pre's 50th birthday run

Have spoken some with Ron Bellamy re: the idea of having a Celebration of Pre's 50th Birthday 5 or 10 k race.  He likes the idea and evidently passed it on to Tom Jordan who was to bring it up at the OTC meeting last week.  I live in B.C. and therefore am a little limited to what I can do.  The prefontainepage.com likes the idea and has contacted the U of O and some others.

Ron recommended that I write a few letters.  So I write to you asking you if there is someone who might thrust the idea into organization.  Monies could go anywhere but why not to fix those rotten top two rows of seats at Hayward Field.

Anyhow. Steve, I think that Pre would be thrilled to see that people are still being inspired to run at all ages and times of their lives and feel like he would approve of a birthday bash 5 k as a way of celebrating him.  Who knows, maybe he may even join in.

Pre inspires 16 year old to run track

I just finished reading your Steve Prefontaine web page, and I think that it is the best with some of the most insightful information that I've come across.

My name is Brandon King, I'm only 16 years old.  This spring I will be going out for my school's track team and its all thanks to the inspiration I have received from Prefontaine.

I've played basketball, baseball, soccer and football but am basically tired of not getting the shot I deserve to prove myself in those sports.  I often found myself just going out and running because I was frustrated over things and because of this I have decided to go out for the track team.

I've seen the Steve Prefontaine Disney movie "Prefontaine" and the documentary of "Fire on the Track".  I haven't read the book Pre yet or seen the other Prefontaine movie "Without Limits", but I plan on it.  The life of Pre has greatly touched me and inspired me.

I'm starting my training for track and am starting to become well conditioned.  I know that since its my first year I won't go out there and become the long distance state champion but I sure as hell plan to go out there giving it my all.

I am writing you in hope that you can pass along any helpful hints, training schedules, and any Prefontaine information other pre web sites, stories that you can pass along to me.

I've found a new hunger for track, and want to learn as much as I can about it.  I feel that by conditioning myself and by becoming a student of the track by studying Pre I can become something.  You also ran under the great coach Bill Bowerman so hopefully you can help me out.

Thanks for everything.

- Brandon

Wants to know more about me (!!)

I was surfing through the web last night and found your Prefontaine web site. The site is the best one I have found so far. You've done a good job with it  :)

While I love Pre to death, I'm not writing to ask about him. I know all there is to know about him, running wise at least. I want to know about you and your running. Tell me everything. I want to know why you started running and what you did with it. I'd like to hear about the beginning before you became successful, and I want to hear about your successes.

I know I didn't tell you before, but my name is Katie and I'm a distance runner. I'm 16 and in high school, I'm trying to earn a scholarship so that I can go to a good school and become an Olympian. I'm not at the level where a top school would want me right now but I think I'm going to break through soon. Very soon, because I know that I can run with the best girls.  It's just a matter of doing it.

I have a story (which is still going on) too. Maybe if you write back, I'll know that you want to hear it so I'll tell you. I don't feel like typing it all out for nothing.

Was Pre really that cocky?

Great website!

You see the movies about Steve Prefontaine and you read all the stuff about him, was he really as sure of himself, cocky, as they say he was?

Have you ever run in the Prefontaine Memorial Run?

Do you know his family?  Keep in touch with them?  Have they ever written anything about him?

- Patty Tait

[Pre was very confident ... some would call that "cocky"]

2 Questions

My name is Matt Lawson and I am the number one Steve Prefontaine fan.

I think you were very great at running too.  I have 2 questions for you.

The first one is where is he buried?  Because I am going to go to his burial site and pay him my respects.

[I think Pre is buried in Coos Bay, Oregon.]

The second one is in the last race that he raced against Finland, Florida, and etc. What did his jersey have on it? I know that it said Norditalia, but I want to know what the symbol was and meant. If you don't mind me asking but if you know what the exact picture is or you have the jersy can I see want the symbol looks like. The reason I am asking this is because the last meet I race this year I am going to were the exact looking jersey that Steve wore.

[The jersey said Norditalia.  I've assumed that it means North Italy and a track club there.  It was common to trade jersies with people that you ran against.  I assume that Pre gave an Oregon Track Club jersey in exchange for that jersey.  It is ironic that Pre selected that black jersey for his last race.]

Well I would be glad if you wrote me back,

- matt l.

Colorado HS 800 meter runner

I have been a big fan of you and Pre for a long time now. I am a freshman in high school in Colorado Springs. I am a runner, as I like to call myself, but not quite. Cross Country season is over and I went to state. I ran a time of 17:12 in the 5K and placed 34th. But I am not sure if long distance is my event. I want to do the 800 meters for the upcoming track season, and I want to be good at it. I have looked up to you when you ran your 1:49's as a freshman in college and I would someday like to do that. When you get a chance, could you give me some tips of how to improve my time in the 800 meters. A couple weeks ago I was running a 1:59, but that isn't good enough for me. I want to be that 4 time state champ of Colorado in the 800 meters and I want to run that the University of Oregon. You have been there, I want to be there. So if you have time, can you please respond to me!

Mike Greenwood

Movie a ritual before race day

What a pleasure to come upon your website!

My wife and I first saw "Without Limits" in 1999 at an arthouse theatre here in the Kansas City area. Since then, I have purchased a VHS copy and watch it the night before raceday. It has become a ritual. I have been running avidly since 1990 and am now 45 years old and my marathon and half-marathon times seem to be improving. I attribute it to inspiration from movies such as "Without Limits" that keeps me training hard and running faster.

Thanks. It's a pleasure to communicate with someone who knew Steve Prefontaine.

What is seat 41 at Hawyard Field?

My friend has a Pre litho that refers to a seat in the stadium at Oregon that apparently has some signifigance with Pre.  I believe it is seat 41--I forget the box number.  Do you know what connection the seat has to Pre?

Moved by the movie

Wow, I just watched "Witout Limits" straight through and was truly moved.

Steve Prefontaine. What a tradgedy to loose someone like Steve so early on his journey of life. I was truly moved by the movie that I had to log on and find out more about this unique indivual. It was also a little eerie to see how much the actor resembled Steve. Thanks for caring enough to dedicate a site to Steve, it is really nice.

A Prefontaine story

I came upon your web site.

I used to run with tom jordan when he was living in the sf bay area.

tom told me a story that when prefontaine showed up for his track workout bowerman asked him what pace he thought he could run for the mile.

pre said that a sub 4 was his goal so bowerman said "good, then 4:40 would be really easy.

pre agreed. so bowerman not wanting to drop the subject went on and said "then 5:20 would be really easy/"

pre agreed again.

bowerman pushed one step further.

"then 5:40 would be a walk in the park" or words to that effect.

so he told pre to go off and run 12 x 440 in 85 seconds.

pre ran the first 440 in 65 and bowerman yelled at him to stand at the finish line until 85 seconds passed.

"I told you to run 85's!!!" he boomed.

pre said that it was too easy. bowerman told him that he didn't really care. he either ran his workouts or he could quit the team.

i saw pre win the PAC 8 cross country title at stanford in 1973. he blew away john ngeno in the last mile. then he won the national championship over nick rose catching and passing him in the last mile.

My guess is by then he was running his intervals faster than 85 seconds.

Looks up to all the old-time runners

I would just like to tell you how much I enjoyed looking at your web site

I am a big Pre fan and Oregon fan. I watch movies about Pre all the time, and this was just great to see more stuff about him and hear what you had to say being his friend. I just want to tell you how much you all have inspired me. I also run cross country in h.s. and everytme I watch one of the movies (Without Limits and Prefontaine) I just get so motivated and go run.  I figure if Pre can run w/ 12 stitches in his foot I can suck up my pain. You, Pre, Moore and Shorter are all inspirations to me and my running. My whole CC team looks up to you guys... we are constantly talking about all of you.

Thank you so much for everything you have done even though you did not realize it. If there is anyway you can respnd to this I would deeply appricate it.

Jennifer
