This is a great web site and im glad to see people are still talking about
Pre.  I was just wondering in the movie without limits, during his jog with
mary on the beach,he says that something happended to him when he was
younger
at coosbay.   I was talking to someone else and they said that his legs got
burnt when he was younger.  I was just wondering if that was true.     Thank
you

Prefontaine / Olympics question

Love your web site.
Question:  Do you know what DATE Prefontaine ran in the 1972 Olympics?
Was it just one race?  When was the final?  Prelims?
Any help you can give me I'd appreciate!

Looking for Pre memorabilia

I am hoping that you can tell us where we can obtain any posters, etc.....any kind of keepsakes pertaining to this great athlete.  My son-in-law is a marathon runner and this is his idle.  I know he has the video and has read a book, but anything else you could suggest would be appreciated.

I just spent the past hour looking at your website dedicated to Steve
Prefontaine. Having recently moved to Oregon to coach cross country and
track at a small college in Portland, I have enjoyed being able to visit and
see the places that I was only able to read about while living in the east.
Thank you for providing a site that offers a personal glimpse into who Pre
was and what it was like to know him and run with him. I thoroughly enjoyed
my time on your site. Is it updated often? I would love to hear more of the
personal stories about him. Thanks again.

I have seen both movies and the documentary.  I am confussed, when did Steve
and Mary stop seeing each other, and when did Nancy and Pre start seeing
each other?  In addition, do you have contact with either Nancy or Mary
today?  I am sure both were effected by knowing Steve.  You have a great
site.  Is there anyway to get additional footage of Pre???  Thanks for your
time.

I wrote you a few times before when I had some questions.  I actually
had
told you that those were the last, but I have a few more if you don't mind.
My History teacher is making my class write a 5 page paper on an athlete who
has inspired us.  I have decided I would write mine on Steve Prefontaine.  I
have read the book and seen the documentary so I have adequate information.
However I was wondering where I could get videos of his races.  I wanted to
show my class and I wanted to just see the races for myself.  I keep reading
how his races were spectacular and how he would just go harder than anybody
else.  I really want to see them for my own eyes.  The documentary is just
not enough.  If you could help me I would really appreciate it.  Steve is my
hero, and I wish I could just see him run a few races.  It really would be
the world for me.  Thanks.

questions I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

Great story.

Great web site.

All I can say is "WOW".  I have watched "Without Limits" too many times to
count and have read Tom Jordan's fascinating "Pre".  My friends and family
aren't sure what to think when I start quoting Pre, I have found Pre to be
an
inspiration to me and I can't help but to share my enthusiasm for the man.
Whenever I find myself giving less than what I know to be my very best, I
remember Pre.  Especially, when I am working out (granted I am not an
Olympic
athlete-far from it) but when I start to slow down or don't think I can find
the strength to go on I remember Pre.

Billy Crudrup as Steve Prefontaine was an excellent casting choice.  I have
just seen "Almost Famous" also with Billy Crudrup what an incredible actor.
Full of the same passion and determination he portrayed while playing Steve
Prefontaine.

Your web site is AWESOME.  Thank you....

I would just like to start out by saying you did a wonderful job on this
website.  I have been so fascinated by Steve Prefontaine's life that I have
purchased the movie and the book.  I just can't seem to get enough.  I have
already read the book twice and seen the movie a dozen times.  I am trying
to
lead my life similar to his in all aspects, except that I don't run track.
I
play high school basketball.  I truly don't believe in talent any more, but
in only hard work.  He has touched me so deeply, I can't even begin to tell
you.
I do have some questions though that I hoped you could kindly answer.  I
am so curious as to why nobody really knew him.  They never really specify
that in the movie or the book.  Why couldn't people find out, even when
trying to get to know him?  I was also hoping you could give me so other
information about him that wasn't in the web site, movie, or book.  I don't
know what I am looking for.  I just need to know something else.
Anyways, I just want to thank you again for the website.  It is by the
far the best one on the Internet.  And believe me when I say I looked.

Hi Steve,
What a wonderful website! thank you for sharing your relationship with Pre
with all of us.  I was wondering if you could tell what Pre's thoughts and
feelings were regarding the horrible massacre of the Israel Olympic team
during the 1972 Olympics.  This must have been devastating for so many that
were there and I was just curious what Pre may have felt or said.  Again,
thank you for your memories, it is apparent that Pre touch many lives.

Dear Mr. Bence,
Unfortunately, I was too young to know who Steve Prefontaine was. I did happen to see the movie, Without Limits. I think you have put together a wonderful tribute to your late friend.  I know this sounds lame, but I can't help but think there isn't anything that we (as humans)  can't do. I really enjoyed the movie. It has really inspired me to find hope again. I write that last sentence, because I served in the persian gulf war in 1990/1991. I was diagnosed with asthma and have complaints of aches in my joints. I played soccer in high school where I was team MVP for three years and captain of my team for two years.  I was named to the NIC-10 All Conference for 3 years. I just hope that I can find that passion for running again. I was not a competitive runner like yourself and Pre, but I ran everyday for endurance. I remember how good it felt to run. What are you up to these days? Again, I thank you for your website.

                                                         Sincerely,

Without Limits / Champions !!

A little (!) slow, I am writing to let you know that Warner Bros.'
decision to show
Without Limits in T-town was a good thing for the Jenks Trojans Cross
Country Men!!
They took the Oklahoma State Championship title the day after the film
came out...
Their victory was almost a miracle, but in the end, their own doing....
with a lot of
inspiration on the side...

One of our fearless leaders, coach George Hall wrote this to our XC email
group (Nov '98)

"The Jenks high school boys X-C team attended the show
> the day before the state high school meet, and the following day at the
state
> high school X-C meet they upset the #1 seeded team from Edmond to win
the state
> championship by 1 point.  Coincidence?  I don't think so - I think the
> inspiration from the film was just enough to get that 1 extra point.
And
> once again, let me ask you to thank Karla (snip)  for her
> efforts in lobbying Warner Brothers to bring the film to Tulsa. This
film
> will only show in limited markets nationwide, so let's all see it
several
> times and encourage others to see it so we have a chance the next time
we want
> an athletic film to show locally."
*********************************************************************
Please let ALL involved in the filming and production of this film, that
there is a whole
new generation of young runners out (t)here, who have appreciated/needed
the inspiration
this film/Steve Prefontaine/Tom Cruise has brought to the new youth out
running in America!!

With great appreciation, and looking forward to supporting you more,

Mr. Bence,

I love your website about the movie "WITHOUT LIMITS".  I would love to know
more about Pre & Mary's relationship.  I remember reading an article that
said you were friends with both of them.  If you could tell me just a few
thing, I would appriciate it VERY much.

1.  How & when did they meet?
2.  How long were they together?
3.  Would you say that they were the loves of each others lives?
4.  Did they remain friends after they broke up?
5.  Did Mary Marckx ever marry or have children?
6.  Did Nancy Alleman & Mary Marckx know each other, If so did they like one
another?
7.  Did Pre & Mary ever live together?     someone told me they did

Thank you very much.   Please responed ASAP

Runner from Israel

I’m 18 years old boy from Israel.
I'm in long distance running for only 1 year, but was a competitive
swimmer for the past 6 years...
I saw Steve Perfontain’s movie by accident, and except of the fact the I
loved it so much, It meant a lot for me because I am a runner too, and I
also had a case death in the close family…
I’m not familiar with your name, but from what I understood so far, you
were a part from the orogon team, met and knew Steve, bill and all the
others.
I really felt “thirsty” for information about Steve prefontaine, even
talking to his parents, friends or coaches (just today I heard that bill
bowerman is not between the living anymore…). I even tried to search
them on the Internet – but not with much success. After seeing your
e-mail address, I felt that you are my salvation. If it’s ok from you, I
would like to talk to you and get more information about all the things
I mention above.

Please replay to this e-mail, because I feel you are the only one I can
talk to about this subject.

Thanks

I watched the movie on Steve Prefontaine a few months
back. Before that, I never knew of his existance. Your
site is the best I have seen on Pre, and thank you so
much for preserving his memory so brilliantly.
It's amazing that anyone could have had the kind of
determination and courage that Pre had. His words, "To
give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the
Gift" have been an inspiration to me in every race
I've run, be it a physical or emotional one, since I
discovered this great athlete.
Pre had said, "I like to make something beautiful when
I run. I like people to stop and say, 'I've never seen
anyone run like that before.' It's more than just a
race, it's a style. It's doing something better than
anyone else. It's being creative." Well, in my eyes
and in my heart, he achieved all of that. I truly have
never seen anyone run the way Steve Prefontaine ran
during his brief life.
Steve Prefontaine is a legend, a role model for each
and every one of us.
Thank you once again for this amazing Pre site. I do
hope like many others, that Mary Marckx will publish
her book, so that each and every one of us have a
chance to get to know this legend better.

Current status of AAU

My son recently discovered the "mile" (1500) and subsequently, Pre's
amazing
life. In order for me to prepare for whatever may be in store for him (he's

it even exist anymore? I'm hoping it has been replaced by an intelligent
association or maybe just a more reasonable group of directors. We enjoyed
your website a great deal and will visit many times to come! Thank you for
all you do for the sport!!

Prefontaine classic tee shirts & posters

Is it possible to purchase any remaining t-shirts or posters from this years
Pre Classic?  I live in Virginia and it was not possible to attend the meet.
I am such a fan of Steve's and would love to possibly find a shirt.  I am
running my 3rd marathon in October.  A picture of Steve hangs on my
refridgerator for inspiration during training.  It is nearly impossibly to
watch Without Limits without crying!  I am such a fan of both he and Bill
Bowerman.  I just turned 30 on the 25th of June.  My running career began in
the 1st grade, through AAU, track, cross country, college and now through
weekend road races.  If you are able to help with any information, Please
let
me know.
Thank you so much for your time.

Mary's book

please, if there is any way i can read her book, that would be the

State University in Kirksville, MO(division 2). I am from Florissant, MO
which is a suburb in north st. Louis county. I research PRE everyday on
my computer and in the libraries. And i pretty much research distance
running from your era more than any other, because it was just
"classic". I appreciate any information on how i could obtain this book,
or how i could read it in any way. I am a HUGE collector of Oregon and
Prefontaine memorabilia so this would mean a lot to me. Also, could you
give me any info. on how mary is. I hear rumors that she is crazy and
other stuff, but i'd like to know first-hand from someone like you,
someone who would know the truth. Thanks for any help.  You were an
amazing runner and you have a great website.

Bowerman Team roster

I attended the Bowerman Family luncheon following the track meet and found
it
to be a moving experiance. I had not seen Barbara since my graduation in
1955
yet she recognized me immediately as I moved to greet her. She seemed as
vibrant and warm as I last remembered her. Unfortunately, I was unable to
get
a team roster and I would like to ask you if you knew where I could send for
one? Thanks for any ideas .GREAT PICTURES!

Bowerman's team picture

The (1962) picture is not 1962, it is 1967.  I was on the team at the time,
but injured and missed the season.  Notice that Neil Steinhauer, Wade Bell,
Arne Kvalheim and
others are pictured who definitely were not on the team in 1962.  Hope this
helps.

PRE and read it in 2 days.  I think PRE's story is magnificant and i wish i
could've lived to know him personally.  He has made such an impact on me
without even talking to him that i can't even imagine the impacts he made to
the people he actually came in contact with.  Go PRE!

I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your website.  I saw
Without
Limits on HBO several months ago and I became an instant Pre fan!  The movie
was great and a huge inspiration.  As a former "star" swimmer it is easy to
relate to his determination and desire to win -  something that I am sure
you
can relate to as well.
    Again,congratulations on your successful website...

Great website!  I've been an avid runner since I was 12 years old, and I've
found Prefontaine's life very inspirational.

I was hoping to find the movie "Prefontaine" on DVD, but I haven't had any
luck.  Any help or assistance you could provide would be greatly
appreciated.

Nike was established in 1971.  In the movie Without Limits, Pre was not
introduced to Bowerman's Nike shoe until he decides to run in Montreal.  Did
Pre wear Nike in the Munich games.  When did he start wearing them and
endorsing them.  Was he the first athlete to actually wear and endorse nike.
Thanks for your time.

Sorry it is so late my computer was down.

                                                                    "Steve
Prefontaine"
There was a man named Steve Prefontaine, he knew of know pain.  He set out
to run to have some fun.  He once said " To give anything less is to
sacrafice you gift".  What he said gave me strength, power, and a major
lift.  Give the ability to run so fast, the pride of running in my heart
will always last.  Even though I am not like him, I know deep down inside I
want to be like him.  Running a pure race straight to the finish line, I
know I could set his pace.  Know one set records like him in the 1 mile and
2 mile his spikes hitting the floor.  I'm glad I have this gift to run, and
obtain that I will never be like my hero Steve Prefontaine.  This year in
cross country I will run a pure guts race, like I know he would do.  I know
everything I know about running cause of you.  You gave me the only gift
that you could do.  Montreal was just an inch away if it wasn't for that
fatel day.  People know you would of had the gold, because of somebodys
talent like your stories are told, crossing the finish line for one final
time.  "You'll always be a hero of mine."  May you rest in peace and let
thee choose who will break your records.

I am constantly amazed at how wonderful the Internet is.

Thank you very much for the remarkable web page you put together.  I looked
for it after watching Without Limits, half because I like Monica Potter and
half because of how much I've heard of Steve Prefontaine from a friend who
was a great high school cross country runner.  (I'm more the basketball sort
myself.)  Then tonight I watched the video Prefontaine.  Then I looked at
your web page again.

I thought, since I had the opportunity, I'd try to ask you a question along
with thanking you, but I don't really have a single question.  I think I'll
just stick with the thank you.  Thanks for making the history of
Prefontaine,
Oregon track, the 1972 Olympics, and more, come alive with the information
you put together.  I've really, really enjoyed looking through it.

Llewellen and Stuber

I just read your excellent web article on the 1962
UO track team.  As a kid, I lived in Eugene during
that time, went to all the track meets, and remember
all of the athletes and their accomplishments.

Right now I'm writing an essay on the high jump.  I
remember two Duck jumpers--Terry Llewellen and Paul
Stuber.  I can't seem to find any stats on them, though.
I've tried the UO Ath. Dept. but found nothing.  Could you
point me to a source for info. on these two?

Hello,
I was looking for the name or MP3 of this great rock song playing during Pre's first run at the university of Oragaon and i found the link to your web page.
The movie was a really great movie and i watched it on the cable, last night once again. Do you have any idea about this rock song? No soundtrack album's been released for this movie, i think. And it looks like it's impossible to find the name or artist of this song.
I'll appreciate if you could help me. May be u have this movie and may watch the list of the songs written at the end the film.
Thanks in advance

The stregnth he held that day was how he ran every time, as  if it were his
last.  He brought out the best in all cometitors and I for one am glad to
have seen him run.  I plan on going to Oregon in September for the Memorail

I love movies but am not really a big sports fan.  I happened to catch on Cinemax today "Without Limits".

Now, I was born in 1970 (I'll be 30 this year) so I had never even heard about Steve "Pre" until today. I certainly didn't know that his coach was the founder of Nike!! I was remarkably drawn to the characters in the movie and just had to learn more about the real person called "Pre". So, I immediately went to the web for more info.

I stumbled upon many sites that were criticizing this movie: bad plot, bad acting,  "Could have been great but they blew it", "No comparison to Hoop Life" etc.  Of course, I never saw the other movie so I had no comparison. All I can say is that any movie that would make me, a non-sports fan, go scrambling to the web to find out more about this real-life sports hero, couldn't be all that bad?? I thought the characters were fantastic and I really felt what was happening there. That doesn't happen to me with many movies. I thought the car accident scene (as morbid & sad as it was...) was very lifelike. I felt like I was in the car right along with him :(

Then I finally came across your site on the Google Search Engine (my favorite! Enter "Steve Prefontaine" and your site comes up third...congrats!!) and thank God I did!! Real pictures, real info...just what I wanted. Thanks so very much!! I will enjoy the info found here for many times to come while I learn more about the fantastic "Pre".

I applaud you for your effort and professionalism!

BRAVO!!

Mary's book

I have been informed that you are still in contact with Mary. Add my name to
list of the thousands that would love for her to publish her book. Not only
for another view of the man that we all know as PRE, but the one that she
knew as Steve.
And the human story that is there. Just the small part that you have posted
on your site shows just how string a bond can be.
Has she given any reason for the book not going to print?

A question

First I wanted to thank you for the great site on Prefontaine.  I think is
very well done. I am not a runner, but a swimmer hera at Georgetown U and
so still relate. My question is one you may not be able to answer, but
perhaps you will be able to help, I run up against a brick wall everywhere
and could not even find help in the Library of congress.  I am looking of
for the orginal film score by Randy Miller.  I don't believe it is
commercially avaiable, but I am doing research on music psychology and
would very much like to use it to this effect?  Do you of anyway to do
this, or perhaps just someone who would be able to point me in the right
direction.  Thank you in advance, and thank you for the wonderful site.

Feedback on emails (from Illinois?)

I want to thank all who were involved with the cyberwake decision.  It is a very unselfish way to mourn a death.  Bill Bowerman was and is great.  His life will continue in all the people's hearts he touched over the years and the years to come.

I have spent a great deal of time on the Bill Bowerman cyberwake website and it has been the most inspirational reading of real lives that I've ever seen.  The most common reason for that is because it is "the real stuff".  The real feedback from real people.

I was hoping that a link might be put together for the website that could inform all of the people interested in attending the Prefontaine Classic on June 24th, 2000.  I am sure the place is going to be packed with all the publicity the memorial has been getting.  The website has take marketing to the next level.  I am sure everyone agrees with that.  I figured Steve Bence could make this happen for all the 4 day vacationers planning to attend that special track meet and memorial on June 24, 2000.  No pressure Steve, but not like you are not used to it.  You should be proud to have shared the cover of a program with Pre.  I am sure your contributions to the team were the reasons for that recognition along with Pre.

I was hoping that a big party was going to be organized ahead of time, so we all could meet some of these athletes of the past.  It could also bring people togehter who made the journey.  It is always nice to talk about running and ways to improve training techniques.  Something to keep in mind as a possibility.  Thank you Steve Bence for looking into this.

The e-mails were great to read through.  It is nice to know that people are seeking the truth about themselves through running in whatever pace one goes at.  Running is a way of life.  As Jim Ryun once told me when I met him at the Jr. Olympics in Kansas City at age 12, "Run with God" he said as he signed the autograph with exactly the same words.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon,

Tim B.

Watched both movies

Excellent Web site

I found it linked from the IMDB. I have seen both of the Prefontaine movies and was interested in more information to fill in the story and to judge the movie's accuracy. Both the Prefontaine and Without Limits were excellent and it is difficult to determine which is the best. I was impressed with how real the recreation of the competition recreations were.

The photos on your site were helpful, particularly of his girl friend. For some reason I like pictures when reading biographies. I read a lot of biographies and the first thing I look for are pictures. There is something about seeing the actual faces that brings a person to life, no matter how good the biography is.

Thanks for  the great site. Also, the link to buy the poster did not work.

Sincerely,

David P.

P.S. With these movies about Prefontaine, I have been watching for ESPN Classic to show some clips they must have in their ABC archives. I would love to watch the 72 Olympic race again (I believe I saw it when I was 13 in 72 on television). Again thanks for the site!

Wishes Mary would publish her book

Dear Steve:

Thank you for your wonderful website on Pre.  I was surprised to learn that Mary Marckx has written a book on her life with Pre but hasn't published it.  Do you know if she has plans to publish the book?  I wish she would because I would love to read it.

I have seen both Pre movies as well as read the book Tom Jordan wrote and although I enjoyed all 3, there are discrepencies between them all.  I would love to read a book by someone who actually knew Pre well.  I hope she eventually gets it published.

Let me know if you have any info on this.

Queens, New York - Pre is amazing

I was flipping through the channels one day when I first saw the movie "Prefontaine".

Amazing is the only word to describe from what I saw I was not even born when Pre died, and I cannot believe the impression he made on so many people, he had such a will to win.

Amazing athlete - the Nike swoosh reminds him of Pre

I think your website is great.  Thanks also for updating it.

I never knew who Steve Prefontaine was until I saw the movie "Without Limits".

Now I want to read everything I can get my hands on about him.  I also bought the book by Tom Jordan and watched "Prefontaine" last night.  What an amazing athlete.

He was the last of a dying breed, always true to himself.  He had a short, incredible life and had so much influence on the world of running.  Whenever I'm in a store and see the "Nike Swoosh" logo, I think of him and Bowerman.

Can't wait to see the Prefontaine Classic in June, will they air "Fire on the Track" again?

Thanks very much.

Melbourne, Australia - an emotional story

Hi,

My name is Kristy - I live in Melbourne, Australia.  I recently rented the video "Without Limits".  Something I have been waiting to do for ages, and hired it on its first day released!

I used to work at Nike in Melbourne and teared up, both with inspiration and sadness, when told of the story about Steve Prefontaine at my induction to the company.

I would like to know when the movie "Prefontaine" was released, as I phoned my local video store and they have no record of it.

Also, the purchase of merchandise, is the internet the only source, or do you know of Australian contacts that would sell some.

The casting of Billy Crudup as Pre was purely delightful on the eyes also (not demeaning his acting talent by any means!).

There is one photo in particular of Pre that I find captivating.  It is a close up photo of his face only, after a race I believe, and he is extremely intense and focused.  It was also used in the movie "Without Limits" amoungst newspaper clippings and photos whown when he died.  Do you know where this photo can be purchased??

I have many close friends who are triathletes and have competed in the Hawaiin Triathlon several times, to watch their determination and sheer will, is an amazing site, as was the movie and storey of Pre. I alikened Pre to Phar Lap and both are two VERY amazing and unique creatures, that you can't help but 'think' afterwards.

Regards - Kristy

Will make a "pilgrimage" to Coos Bay

Steve,

I did see Without Limits multiple times (I have it on tape now too).

It is infinitely better than "Prefontaine" My favorite part is when Bowerman is measuring Pre's foot and looks up and says, "Welcome to the University of Oregon, I'm Bill Bowerman".  And Pre says "I know. I'm Steve Prefontaine." And Bowerman says, "I know."   I get chills.

Anyway, I can understand why Mary won't publish her personal and cherished memories of her time with Steve. It seems fitting that he is still making noise, even in the afterlife.

Myself and two friends want to make a "pilgrimage" to Coos Bay in September to run in the 10k. It is just a pipe dream right now, but we talk about it all the time. In the meantime we'll just keep running our trails with our Prefontaine Memorial Hill (it's a killer) and our Bowerman Loop (named the day after Christmas). Maybe we'll name something after you. (Like a water station)

A romantic at heart - does Mary still feel Pre's presence ?

I visited your Pre website today. As always whenever I read anything about him, I am moved. I think you did a great job, but I am disappointed that Mary decided not to publish her book. The prologue on your site is such a teaser. Do I understand correctly that she still feels Steve's presence in a paranormal way? I certainly hope so because that would be so wonderful and comforting for her. Not to mention the scads of Pre fans like myself, who no matter how much I learn or read about him, can't erase the fact that he is still dead. Sometimes it's easy to forget when you're reading old race summaries or articles or watching the movie. Then it really sucks when you remember that he's dead.

Anyway, thanks again for the site and try to convince Mary to publish her book. I'm dying to find out more about them because I'm such a romantic at heart.

Keep the memory of Pre alive

Hi Steve,

First of all I appreciate your site dedicated to the athelete that I esteem above all others for what he achieved and for what he would have achieved.  I was studying at Lane College in Eugene in 72.  After we won the national cross country championships in Florida that year Mr. Bowerman and Pre gave us a luncheon and congratulated us for the title; it is one of my favorite memories.

At the end of the exerpt from Mary's book she recommends referring to the "bibliography" at the back of the book; but I could not find that.  Is it available?

I have become rather fixated on Pre's life over the last few months having seen both of the movies and read Tom Jordan's book.  Sometimes when I run, at night especially, I feel, or at least imagine I do, Pre's presence during the run and easily pick up the pace; its an exciting imagination at the least and makes me look forward to the next run and meeting.

Out of curiosity, did Steve have many encounters with Christians, besides Jim Ryun, during his "run" on this earth?

I hope that Mary does publish her book.  I'm sure many people would love to read it; I sure would.

Thank you for indulging me and for the work you have done to keep the memory of Pre alive.

Sincerely,
Gary

(later)  Thank you for your quick response to my e-mail.

Are there any other books besides the one written by Tom Jordan, about the life of Pre?  If there are please tell me where I might order them from.

How do you like the "Bowerman" shoes that I have been reading about?  Sorry for all the questions, but as you can see I have a great interest in Mr. Bowerman, Pre and anyone involved with U of O and running during that time period.

I have not found any books written by Mr. Bowerman, but if there is any available I would like to find out where to get them as well.

Just being there as a runner at a time when, is it true, that the best, most talented runners that Eugene/U of O ever assembled
was a privlege.

Thanks again.
Gary

Atlanta, Georgia - outstanding tribute to Pre

Dear Mr. Bence,

I have long been a fan of Steve Prefontaine.  Your website is by far the best one out there.  I recently saw the movie "Without Limits" and found the website as a link on your site.  In reading about the movie, I was intrigued and happy to know that so many people who knew Steve personally were involved in making it come together.  He was a true inspiration to those of us who
are also runners.  I (and I know many others) appreciate the hard work and effort you made in putting together such an outstanding tribute to Steve.

I also read about Mary Marckx' book "Pre Destiny".  Do you know if she would ever reconsider publishing it?  If it's at all possible, would you pass some information on to her?  I too lost someone very special to me when I was only 21 (I am 36 now).  He was not only a boyfriend, but a best friend as well.

When I read Mary's comments about Steve, I couldn't help but think that her book might help others heal.  I don't know how she got through it.  I too can completely understand her feelings about having a bond with someone even after they're gone.  I just wanted her to know that there are so many people out here who continue to sort out not only life but facing death as well.  Maybe she would reconsider someday in the spirit that it might help those of us who are left behind.  I understand all about the fight with ghosts.

In any case, if the status of her book ever changes, would you please let me know?  Thanks!  And thank you for bringing and keeping Steve Prefontaine "alive" to inspire younger generations who didn't get a chance to know him first hand.

Sincerely,
Michelle

From a friend

Hi B -

We were looking thru some Marathon websites looking for info on marathons in our region and found one down in Fiji for June 17. As we were doing so, we came accross your interview with Don Allison about your consulting on the movie "Without Limits" which then moved us to go get the movie.

We enjoyed both the interview and the movie.   Well done. The kids thought there was too much kissy-kissy (and of course Hiroko and I didn't think it was explicit enough). It reminded me of how much we missed by not seeing him run in Montreal.

Take care and keep up the good work.  Say hello to Mary for us.

Sorry about Bill Bowerman

Steve,

Very sorry to read about Coach Bowerman, though. I am sure everyone there must be taking it hard.

I rerented Without Limits. Nice shot of you on the bar stool.

Best regards,

From a high school classmate

Steve,

I was watching a great movie, "Without Limits", 1998, Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland. At the end of the movie I saw, Track Consultant, Steve Bence. I want to say that this is you. You work for Nike, this movie was about Steve Prefontaine the runner in the early 70's and Bowerman that was involved with Nike.

Two thumbs up

Mr. Bence,

I had not even heard of Steve Prefontaine until I had seen the movie made about his short and wonderful life after high school.  I am not a very easy person to get too, unless it is something heartfealt or patriotic.  You have two thumbs up here!

Sincerely,

Jason

Pre is his hero

Mr. Bence,

I do not know if you received my last e-mail.  I was the one who would like to meet you as well as Mary.  Please e-mail me.  I would love to talk to you more.  Pre is my hero.

Thank You,

Frank

Bowerman a great teacher

Dear Mr. Bence,

I would be more than happy to contribute to the Oregon track team.  Bill Bowerman has taught me to believe in myself and that anything is possible.

Even though that I have never met Mr. Bowerman before,  I feel that he has taught me much more than any of my track coaches have.  From readings and other stuff,  he has taught me that hard work,  patience and believing in yourself will get you farther in life.  He has taught me that track is more than just winning races, trophies and other stuff like that.   I would like
to get more information on Bill Bowerman and  his athletes.

I hope to hear from you soon.   Thank you.

Sincerly,

Jeff

A huge Pre fan

Mr. Bence,

Man, you must feel like you ran with a GOD now that Steve is having all these movies made about him.  I am a HUGE Pre fan.  I wish I was running in his era.  I would like to know what it felt like whaen he came on the track in person?  I have a lot of Pre things from the inter-net and what ever else I can find.  I would kill for a Go Pre shirt, as well as meeting you and Mary in person.  I am just sitting here in awe writting to someone who ran with the MAN.  Your web site is the best on the net.  If you could foward me some other e-mail address for other team mates I would love it.

I would love to chat with you some more about your career as well as Steve's some day.

Thank You (keep up the work on the web site)

Pre is a Hero

Since Christmas, I've already seen the movie four times.  I hadn't heard much about Pre before the movie, but now he is a hero of mine.  I love his philosophy.  I love the soundtrack to the film, and I wondered if you knew if it is available at all.

Go Pre!

Thank you,

Steven
