Canada - Pre is her hero

Hey,

Did you really know Steve Prefontaine?  He has been my hero as long as I can remember.  If you could send me any information on him that would be great.  I live in Canada so it is hard to find information on him.  Please write back soon.

Pre fan,

Melissa

Thanks for awesome site

Dear Steve Bence,

Thanks for your awesome Pre site. The content alone is quite inspiring for my running, but so, too, is the fact that the producer (you) is/was actually of the Pre generation of star distance runners (and a former teammate, to boot!).

Jud Santos

PS - I was wondering, what's your running like these days? Do you compete at all?

A deep and lasting impact

Hi!

I'm responding to your web page invitation to e-mail you because I wanted to thank everyone who had a hand in creating Without Limits.

This movie had a deep and lasting impact on me.  I had not heard of Pre or either of the films about him.  I just picked it up on a hunch at the video store.  I watched it twice before returning it.

I sat down and cried after the second time, not because he died, but because he lived!! So passionately; so optimistically; just so much. Positive Passion is so critical to life.

I wish Mary Marckx would publish her book so that we could get more of an inner glimpse of him. Someone who has been emotionally close has a unique access to how he created himself.

So thank you for your web-page too, it has a lot of great stuff on it. I wish all the creative hands in the film had e-mails so I could thank them.  My life has been different since I saw it.

Sincerely- Raya B.

Without Limits - a great movie

I just saw Without Limits last night and I thought it was a great movie!

I am a long distance runner for my high school and I find movies about running extremely inspirational.  I was wondering if you have any tips on which ones are the best (I've already seen 'Prefontaine', 'Chariots of Fire', and obviously 'Without Limits')  Thanks!

Pre pics

I'm a 17 year-old-track and x-country runner and I had an idea for a T-shirt and I was looking for a picture of Pre with his foot all bloody like it was in the movie. Can you help me?  I would really appreciate it if you could.

Thanks.

Outstanding and Amazing

I have been a very avid and competitive runner since junior high 15 years ago.  I watched "Without Limits" last night and was moved.  It was an outstanding and amazing movie and story about an outstanding and amazing athlete and man.  I have been thinking and talking about it all day long.

I would like to purchase a University of Oregon Track sweatshirt.  Can you point me in the right direction?

Thank you,

Andrew

Which is real ?

I've seen both prefontaine movies, the one starring jared leto and just recently the one starring billy crudup. i'm just wondering which facts are true? they have the same events but different ways they happened. like when pre ran the 1970 nationals on a hurt foot, was it because of the pool like in the first one or because of a girl in the second one? in the second movie they implied he stopped training and began working at a bar and then started up again. but in the first one he never stopped training he just had problems with motivation. and in the second movie, you can't tell if he's still with his girlfriend because he treats her like crap and they skip over the whole AAU thing. that's my thoughts on the movies. i was just wondering.

Pre

Dear Mr. Bence:

I discovered your website a few days ago, after researching Steve Prefontaine, after renting the movie "Without Limits" (which I just reviewed for my fitness column in the company newsletter).

Great site.  I get a much better perspective on Prefontaine the man, not necessarily the "myth".  There are times when I think the guy was
>superhuman, then I realize he was just gifted with a great physiology,
>he trained hard, and he had an incredible ability to push his limits.
>(well, come to think of it, I guess Pre was a little "super"-human)!!

>I'm 40-years-old, so I remember reading about him in Sports Illustrated
>when I was a teenager, then seeing him in the '72 Olympics.  I was never
>much of an athlete then, but I took up competitive running a few years
>ago, and I'm doing ok (my 5K PR is 18:54).  In fact, I'm running a
>half-marathon tomorrow morning, then I'm doing the 103rd Boston in
>April.  I've been stricken with "Pre-itis", and I ran my best training
>run ever last night!

>I loved "Without Limits" and taped it for my kids to watch.  My
>8-year-old boy is the fastest runner in his grade, so I'm hoping he can
>one day break Pre's under-19 American record for the 5K (but I won't be
>a pushy parent).

>Anyway, great site, great movie.  I hope to one day run in Coos Bay, as
>well as the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, so maybe I'll see you then!

Pre

Dear Steve,

Thanks for emailing me back.  I just wanted to tell you that I finished
showing my class of seniors the film "Without Limits" today.  I had cleared
the showing of it before-hand with their parents via permission slips ("just
in case"--because there was the f-word used a couple of times).  Attendance in
class the two days that I showed it was nearly perfect.
I did some prepping of them ahead of time by telling them about U of O track,
the different events, and the history of the era.  Frankly, they seemed to be
absolutely mesmerized by the movie and Prefontaine's story.  They were
completely quiet and intent for the whole film and genuinely involved with and
saddened by what eventually happened.  I copied a lot of stuff from your
website to share with them later.  We just had time to finish the film today
and talk just a little bit.  They will write next week the first couple of
days.  I will send you some of the better papers later; I do have some pretty
bright kids in the class, so I'm sure there will be some interesting ideas. I
just thought you might like to know.  I will probably need your mailing
address, as I am probably not going to be able to send them electronically--I
can make copies of the papers, no problem.

My wife went to Catholic school, graduating from Holy Child Academy, so she
recognized your wife's school,  Marycrest.  She thought the name Jacko sounded
familiar.  What grade school did they attend?  My wife's maiden name was
Janice Glayzer.

Hope things are going well.  I will talk to you when I finally get their
papers graded.  Just thought you might like to know that the kids really
seemed to get a lot from the movie. It was fun for me to share it with them,
too.  I thought Billy Crudup was nearly identical to Pre in looks, mannerisms,
and running style; he did a great job.

Take care,

Mike S.

Dear Steve,

>I have just finished looking at nearly everything on the web site for the
>"Without Limits" movie, including all the Prefontaine information that you
>compiled.  I really enjoyed reading it and looking at all of the
photographs!
>They brought back many memories for me.  My twin brother and I grew up in
>Eugene, graduating from Willamette High School in 1973 and the U of O in
1976
>and 1977. We started running in road races in college, and we both
eventually
>ran around 10 marathons.  We went to many track meets at the U of O while
we
>were in high school and college, and we saw Prefontaine run many times (I
have
>seen you run many times, too). Nearly everyone on your web site is a
familiar
>person to me, and some of them I met personally.  While I was in high
school,
>my junior year I think, Pre coached a team that I was on in a fund-raiser
>basketball game against a group of local radio disc jockeys (KUGN, I
think).
>After the game, our team went to the local Dairy Queen with Pre and we sat
>around for some time talking and having a good time.  I will never forget
>that.  Anyway, the web site made me pretty sad at times and nostalgic. I am
>currently an English teacher at Parkrose High School in Portland.  I plan
to
>show the "Without Limits" film in my class, in conjunction with a writing
>assignment discussing the Bowerman/Prefontaine relationship and asking the
>students to talk about any mentor relationships that they might have had in
>their lives and what they learned from them. Thanks again; I hope that all
is
>going well for you in your current life.

>Sincerely,

>Mike S.

Love the website

My son (11) has seen both films on Pre and is a new fan.  Your website is

Loved the movie

Steve,

My mother rented the movie for me Wednesday. I loved it. At the end of the movie it showed the credits and although it said your name at the end I don't remember your character.

I wanted to ask you if you know where I can find some info on Gerry Lindgren. I have found a couple of web sites with him on it. Do you know his story?

Enjoyed the website

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your website.  I was a runner in highschool (1980's) and my older brother used to talk about Steve Prefontaine.  I suppose I feel some sort of sentimentality because my brother was a track runner and passed away when he was 25 in a drowning accident.

I rented the movie Without Limits last night and enjoyed it very much.  It must have been a thrill for you to run for the University of Oregon and be in the same league as Steve Prefontaine.  I entertain the notion of starting running again and feel catapulted into the past when looking at your website.  I was a "pretty good" female distance runner and probably would have done better had not injury and lack of mental toughness gotten the better of me.

I have a Finnish background and have read the Lasse Viren book over and over again.  He was a great runner as well.  To double in the 5,000 and 10,000 in the 72 and 76 Olympics!   However, I am very interested in purchasing the book about Steve Prefontaine and reading that.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I enjoyed your website!

Pre enthusiast

I enjoyed the movie, but dramatic additions really stuck out.  I understand the Why's, but I feel it harmed the movie to dramatize a fantasticly inspirational story.  However,...great flick.

I am interested in Pre memorabilia, and curious as to whether you may have information on where to look.

Thanks for you help, and I am no critic, so take my opinion for what it is worth.  Yet, thanks for asking for it.

Hola,

Just wanted to let you know that I really liked your Pre site.  Very authentic.

Thanks for opening up your memories and your photos for us to share.

Wisconsin - Fascinated by Pre

Hello,

My name is Maggie and I am a 16 year old runner in Wisconsin.  I just finished watching a movie on Steve Prefontaine, and I am so completely fascinated by this individual whom you have had the privilege to know.  I have been reading on him on the Internet for two hours, when I came upon your web-site. (which by far is the most interesting and most complete!!)

I was so motivated after learning the story of Pre that I immediately went into my room, began to lift and do abs, and set my alarm clock early to go run before school tomorrow.  I am not by any means an amazing runner like Pre, but I did win the 1998 WISAA Cross Country Championship.  (that is private schools only; there are about 18 runners that are faster than me in the public schools in Wisconsin).  This year will be my first year running track.  I am very excited.  I'm determined to win another state championship.  Pre, and your entire Oregon team have been sparked intense inspiration in me.

I was just wondering if there is anything more you can tell me??  I would be more than thrilled to hear anything (on your experiences running, on Pre, or any ideas on how to get an edge above all other competition).  Are you still involved in running?  Do you coach?  I would be more than happy to hear from you --- your experience and accomplishments are remarkable.  Well, even if you do not have time to respond, thank you for such a great web site!!  It's awesome!

Sincerely,

Maggie

P.S.  My uncle was on the US National Team a few years back.  (Clem Grum is his name)  Pretty cool, huh??  Maybe someday, I could get to that point!!

Very good job

Mr. Bence,

>I saw your Steve Prefontaine web page on the internet and I have to say
>you did a very good job of it.  I haven't been a Pre fan for long but I'm
>very interested in him.  Through your sight, I found a book on him that
>I'm now aiming to buy and the Without Limits movie, which the people who
>work at my local movie stores say was never released.

Do you have any more information on him?  For example where he was buried, and where Coos Bay is exactly?  I'm researching the University of Oregon partically from the drama program and partically from curiousity to see where Pre went.

I know a woman who went to school with Pre and she speaks of him frequently, or at least answers my questions whenever I ask.  If you could get back to me, I'd be extremely grateful.

Help

Hello I am a swimmer on the United States national team headed for Sydney in 2000.  I have had problems recently with our governing body and thier wavering support and double-sided views on athlete support.  A recent drop in finacial help has caused many of the top ranked U. S. Swimmers to fall into the poverty level.  I understand this is what Pre fought for and I am a huge and I mean huge Pre fan and admire what he did for the sport of running.  I need motivation as these athletes have called on me to lead them in a rally for support of our elite athletes.  We are all willing and want to give back to this sport and this seems like a great way to do that as well.  I am interested in Steve's word's and yours.  I am very familiar with Steve's speech the to the press about paying his electric bills like any other american and so forth and athletes being left out to pasture after college.

In fact it is on my homepage in quotes.  Our program needs reconstruction and I have been asked to lead the fight.  I am telling you now Steve Prefontaine and the accomplishments of all you guys are my motivation. Any help you can give will be so greatly appreciated.  tommorrow I am writing a letter to our big publisher in the sport of swimming at "Swimming World" magazine and I
just made an official protest which ironically is the opposite of what STeve did.

I was forced to decline a trip to Europe in order to find a minimum wage job to support my training.  I did this in protest.  I hope you can offer some guidance and maybe some motivation.  Thank you for your time.

Most Sincerely,

Bobby

Brenham, Texas - Pre Memorabilia

Dear Steve,

My name is Billy Johnston, I am a cross country and track and field coach in Brenham, Tx.  I have a strong interest in memorabilia of track and field, in specific Steve Prefontaine.  I sam looking for pictures, posters, cards, etc. I am also looking for old footage of past races, Olympic Trials, National Championships, and the Olympics. I am interested in mostly distance races, example-Pre's 5,000 in 1972, Billy Mills 10,000 final, Seb Coe's and Ovett's battles. If you have any information about such merchandise would you let me know.

Thanks

Seattle, Washington - Pre Pics for office

Steve,

I enjoyed your Prefontaine page and all of the pictures.  I am a new attorney and former Stanford runner who is trying to "customize" my office w/ a few wall hangings.  What I want to do is blow up and frame a black and white of Pre running.  Do you have any idea how I might get access to such pictures?

Thanks again for putting together a great Pre page.  Wish I had been a runner back when you and Pre were running.  At the time, I was just learning to walk.

Take care.

Really enjoyed the info on Pre

Steve

Really enjoyed your info on Pre.

I saw pre run in a indoor meet in Portland,OR in January 1972.  It was the only race I saw him run in person. After that race, I was a diehard Pre fan. I would like to see someone make a VHS tape of Pre's most memorable races from start to finish.  I would be one of the first to purchase it.

Anyway, thanks again and "GO PRE"

Sacremento, California - Why no marketing for the movie ?

I just wondered, given all the good reviews, called 9th best film of 1998 by Time, and the fact "Without Limits" is a very good movie, why was there absolutly NO marketing of the film?  I was lucky enough to catch the movie at a very small theater in Santa Cruz, CA, and once again when it came to Sacramento, CA.  However, both times, there was not even a single ad in the paper.  It easily could have been missed.

This was a good movie, not just for runners, but for non-runners alike.  Why wasn't this marketed as a Tom Cruise film?
