December 30, 1998 Eulogy transcript ? Do you know if there is anywhere on the web to find a transcript of the Prefontaine eulogy ....."He has one more lap"....I read it in Runners World years ago, but cant find it anymore. Thanks, TIM PATNODE
December 30, 1998 Findlay, Ohio Hi, We live near Findlay,Ohio and we heard the movie was showing in Columbus,Ohio. Just wondered if you knew if it was going to even play in our area and if not. Could you let us know how we can get a hold of it on video when it is possible? Please e-mail back with any info. Thanks a lot, Ann H.
December 28, 1998 Obsessed with Pre Dear Mr. Bence, My boyfriend, Nick, is completely obsessed with Steve Prefontaine. I was wondering if you could just send him some personal e-mail on Pre or something. I look on these Pre pages very often to find new information for him, but I know he'd be excited to receive something from you. He makes us watch "Prefontaine" almost every day,and the just bought Tom Jordan's book. He also wants me to order "Without Limits" for him. I was just wondering if you could send hime something. You can send it to this address, if possible. Thank you! Sarah
December 26, 1998 The sport of running I am a High school Cross Country and Track Coach at a new high school. I took several runners to see the movie and they were impressed. Sadly, however, there were few others in the theatre. Our sport needs a lot more good publicity. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels trying to push for the type of dedication it takes to win. I hope to see this movie out in video soon so that more people can see what a special human being that Steve was. The "Prefontaine" movie was in some respects better because it seemed more genuine. But "Without Limits" definitely has some good technical and insightful revelations! Running For Christ, Brian
December 26, 1998 Video release date ? Just wondering when Without Limits will be coming out on video. I missed it in the theaters as I was always busy with cross country meets on the weekend and never got a chance to see it, but I've got the movie poster! Thanks a lot, Adam
December 26, 1998 Pre fan from Utah PRE fan from UTAH!!! Steve, Being a huge fan of Pre, I am very impressed with your web-site. I am currently a junior and next year's captain for the cross country team at American Fork High School in American Fork, Utah. Last year I found the movie "Prefontaine" at a local video store and since one of there is a drawing of Pre with one of his quotes in our locker room I decided to rent it. It was definitely not what I expected; it was better!! After watching it, it immediately made me want to go on another run. Prefontaine has been a great motivation for me and has helped me to set many goals for myself in my running career. I was finally able to purchase it after that. I too have dreams of competing for the USA in the Olympics and to be one of the world's best. I really admire Pre for the sacrafices he made, the guts he had, the determination to win, and the great pride and dedication he had for the sport. His life story is truly inspiring to me. Now being such a huge Pre fan, I too have been impatiently waiting for the release of "Without Limits". It is now December 26th, 1998, about 3 months after the original release date was set. Living in Utah Valley (home to such teams as the: 1997 NCAA Womens Cross country national champions BYU ranked #1 through 1998 season), the outstanding BYU track teams, the #1 ranked high school running program and 1998 High School cross country champions Mountain View High School out of Orem, and next year's favorite for Footlocker High School individual national champion Josh Rohatinsky from Provo High) I am surpised that Without Limits has still not been advertised anywhere in the county except for ads in magazines such as Runner's World. I have not seen any previews for it on TV or the theaters. So if anybody has any information on when and if "Without Limits" will show on any big screens in the state of Utah, or why it hasn't....please e-mail me. Does anybody also have any recent information on a release date for "Without Limits" coming out on video to rent or buy and can anybody tell me how I can order or see "Fire on the Track" ??????? Thanks, A.F.H.S. Caveman X-country captain,
December 17, 1998 Pre Poster I'm trying to find posters for sale of Prefontaine. So far the only one I can find is a sort of Collage from Nike called Godspeed (1997). Any ideas? Thanks.
December 16, 1998 Dallas, Texas My name is Phil Smith and I live in Dallas Texas. My son is 15 and runs track and cross country at his high school and is a huge fan of Steve Prefontaine. Do you know where I can purchase a poster, signed picture, videos of him running or any other items of Steve? Thank you in advance for your help. Please email me or call my office at 800-634-8917. Thank you Phil smith
December 13, 1998 I would enjot it if you could send mea Prefontaine Background for my computer. I have looked everywhere and cant find them. Thank you for your time. My E-Mail address is Pre229@hotmail.com. Once again thank you.
December 11, 1998 Penn State Hello, I'm a freshman at Penn St. in Erie, Pa. I run cross country and track and I just started my own personal web page. I was wondering if you would allow me to use some pictures from your Prefontaine website. It would be greatly appreciated if you could let me. Also keep in mind that my page is not on any search engine and can only be found by my friends that have my address so your pictures will not be accessible to very many people at all. Please e-mail me and let me know if I could do this. Thank you very much, Brian
December 4, 1998 Louisville, Kentucky Hello, this is Daniel Warren again. Would you mind telling me more about Pre and what kind of a person he was to be around? Tell me some stories about things you have seen him do or say. I would deeply appreciate it. If you ever come through Louisville let me know. I work at a 5 diamond
restaurant, I would enjoy talking with you about some things you had a
chance to witness. Well, take care.
Daniel Warren
December 01, 1998 Footage? I would like to know more about Pre and if there is any live footage of him and how I could find it. I would also like to ask you a few questions. How close were you to him? Thanks, Daniel Warren
December 01, 1998 Northern Michigan University Mr. Bence My name is Jed Friedrich. I am a student at Northern Michigan University. I enjoyed looking through your Pre website. I am a freshmen and I am on the cross country ski team here in Marquette. I was also a distance runner in high school and last year I researched Steve Prefontaine for pure enjoyment. I read the book written by Tom Jordan and I have watched the movie "Prefontaine." I haven't seen the new movie, "Without Limits" in theaters or in rental stores. I have also been trying to find a way that I could buy a personal copy of both movies. If you could send me any information or an address that I could use to obtain copies of these movies that would be great. Last year, I was the captain of the cross country team and it was my responsibilty to design a team shirt. On the back of the shirt, I used a quote from Pre. People all around town loved the shirt and people took an immediate interest in Pre. If you have any additional information about collecting Pre items that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for making a great web page of one of my heroes. Jed Friedrich
November 27, 1998 Hi! I love your page! It amazes me every time I read something new about Prefontaine. When he was alive, did everyone really look at him like he was a living legend? I'm a 15 year-old track and CC runner from Albuquerque, NM. You used a lot of samples from Tom Jordan's book. Do you know where I can get it? Please write back. Thankyou!
November 23, 1998 South Carolina I loved your web page! I run cross-country in South Carolina for a highscool team and I found it inspiring.
November 19, 1998 Do you know where I could get a copy of "Fire on the Track" ...The Steve Prefontaine Documentary?
November 17, 1998 Go Pre shirt? I was interested in knowing where I could get a Go Pre shirt, I would really like to get one. I know there was a number you could call up in the back of Runners World, but that number seems to be out of service. If you know anything could you please e-mail me back. Thanks a lot for your time. Mike(Pre fan)
November 15, 1998 My name is Emily Phillips. I'm 16. I watched "Prefontaine" last night. It was a very interesting movie. I did not know Steve Prefontaine died in it. I also didn't know if Steve was a real guy because it was a movie so I got on the internet and I came across your website. His life seems very interesting to me. I'm not very big either and I play sports and people feel I don't have the muscle to be worth competing against but I prove them wrong. His story is very inspirational to me. It must have been really hard knowing him and then have him die suddenly. In the movie, "Prefontaine" it shows another car collides with his around that one curve. Is that true? Becasue in your website it says he ran into the rock. Is Coach Bowerman still alive? Or should I say Bill Bowerman? I'm sure you get a million emails a day but if you could take a few moments and write me back I would appreciate it. Thank you for listening, Emily Phillips
November 13, 1998 Louisina Great stuff man. I printed some of the pictures and hung them on my wall. Thanks for putting this stuff on the net. Joe Fong

November 11, 1998 Denver, Colorado Steve, Thanks for offering this page about Pre. Last week my son and I saw the first Pre movie on cable here in Denver. I'll tell you I have read about Pre but I never had a thorough understanding on how he really influenced running overall. I think the movie was well played even though I have nothing to compare it to. I really enjoyed the authentic race film next to the "Hollywood" scenes. It was great to see the reverence paid to Pre by including actual footage. I think I have a more thorough understanding of Pre after seeing this movie. Hopefully I'll have even a better understanding when I see the next one. Thanks, Mark
November 11, 1998 I really liked your webpage. vincent Schurger
November 01, 1998 Pre Posters? i am in search of posters of steve prefontaine. if you could help me please email me at Nepo25@aol.com. thank you
October 26, 1998 Drinking & Driving Steve was a great and inspirational runner. He certainly had discipline in his life concerning running. Everyone seems to agree that he ran with 'guts' and then more "guts." The tragedy and one thing we all should look at is his penchant for drinking and driving. He thought nothing of driving his MG with at least 9-10 beers in him, a 0.16 blood alcohol level (0.10 is the legal designation of DUI in Oregon). If we could all learn a lesson from him in this area, including his running, I'm sure it would please him if somehow he could know. It would have been wonderful to see "Pre" run for several more years. Walt Klingerman
October 28, 1998 Lafayette, Indiana Your web page is great. My name is Grant &, I live in Lafayette, Indiana. I'm writing you because I think the way Pre does. If I want to be the best I have to train like the best. I'm in cross country now, and I have semi-state next saturday. I wanna make it out so bad. Last year I wasonly 6 seconds away. Reading or thinking about Pre's accomplishments just makes me want to run my balls off. I myself am a miler' & there isn't a better race. I made it to state in that last year and got the fastest sophomore time in Indiana at 4:24 (I'm gunin' for Pre). So thank you for all you have done, and I'm sure Pre is happy for his web page. Oh, by the way I love how Steve was cocky. That is what makes it fun for me. My favorite quote: "I try to set up the race, that in the end it will be a pure guts race, and I'm the only one who can win." --------- Steve Prefontaine Sincerely, Grant
October 24, 1998 Hi Steve, Very nice Pre site! Excellent design. I'm attaching a photo of the 1970 NCAA track meet, the start of the 3 mile. You mentioned how you hadn't found one and this is better than nothing. Pre is in the green shorts fifth from right. The low quality of the photo is due to the fact that the source is a 3D viewmaster reel. You know how small those little slides are! GAF put out a three reel set of the 1970 NCAA T&F Championships, it's pretty nice, including a shot of Liquori outkicking Wottle in the mile... The booklet that comes with the set describes Pre's injury: ""Pre" had spent four days in bed, his foot wrapped in a Baggie. For the NCAA meet, they taped it and hoped the wound would not reopen. If it did, Prefontaine said he would keep going until he "finished or ran out of blood." I've added a link to your site from mine, and I thought you might be interested in a page I have on my site. Check out <http://www.runningpast.com/pre.htm> Regards, Andy Yelenak
October 21, 1998 Pre Memorial Run I'm interested in getting info on running the Prefontaine Memorial run. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Harry
Hey Steve.... Thanks for the website on "Pre".... I am a runner, now 40 years old and in school was only a sprinter but held some records of my own....I only wish I would have known more about "Pre" in my days to inspire me to use my natural talent and his burning desire to WIN..... I still run, mostly 5 & 10ks.....for the comadarie and to keep some of those really great running memories alive, no matter how old one gets...RUNNING is "Forever"...... THANK YOU and keep up the great work!!! Mark H..... P.S. They can make 10 movies and I would never get enough
Hi, I am a runner at Mansfield University Pennsylvania. I just spent 2 hours reading about Pre. I am only a sophmore this year, and have won 3 out of five races, had a runner up and a 5th place. I have really been hooked on "PRE FEVER" for the past year. He is a true inspiration to me. "PRE" is just another word for "GOD" too me. Everytime I hear his name I get coldchills. Last year I would try to run with his guts, and failed severly to perform at my best. (Last year as a freshman I ran a PR in the 25 minutes) This year we ran a course that is somewhat hard for runners to even break 28 minutes. I really felt I was going to win this race, so one more time I was going to try and run a Pre kind of race. I took out the first mile in a 4:46, and it was all up hill from there. Eventually my 100 meter lead boiled down to some kid taking my lead only 2 and a half miles into the race. He had about a 10 meter lead on me with 200meters to go. I reminded myself of the Pre way of running. I took off with about 200 meters to go, and won by 10 seconds. Though I wasn't to happy with my time, it was probably the most satisfying victory that I have had. Finally I had a taste of what it must have felt like for pre and the end of the race. He ran with BALLS! "GO PRE" Could you give me any information about when the movie might possibly becoming out, or at least a clue. I have seen previews for it on T.V. and the suspense is killing me. And Congratulations on your glory days as well. It sounds like you were one hell of a runner yourself. It must have been an honor knowing Pre! It's also an honor writing you! If you can find a moment can you please respond with some information? Thank you very much!! Todd,
Steve, You probably don't remember me and I didn't remember you until i was going through the Pre Without Limits program on the internet and tried to figure who Bence was. I then saw the picture I took of Matt, you, Pre and Mark in front of his house on mckinley street. I was living with Steve along with Bob and Brett Williams. My relationship with Steve dated back to Coos Bay where we met in grade school and became close friends from 5th grade on. We lived a couple blocks from each other and spent a lot of time doing all the things kids do in a small town. When we graduated from Marshfield, he went to Eugene and I into the service. I got out jan of 94 and moved in with him a few months later. I took time yesterday and drove up to Portland and watched the new movie. My feelings are mixed regarding what I saw but I like what you have done on the internet. I was involved in the first movie as a consultant, spending time with Hollister, Jared Leto, Irby Smith and of course Steve James. This was my first experience with holllywood, a real eye opener. For the most part I was disappointed with the finished product but the budget was limited. My wife says regardless of how great a movie of Pre might be, I would still be disappointed. I asked to be involved because I wanted to have some influence on the content, the way Steve was portrayed. As I learned, some influence is better than none. Like so many other individuals worldwide, Steve touched my life in a way that most people couldn't possibly understand. I have an idea you know what I mean. I have no idea where you live but if by chance you find yourself in or around Salem, I'd like to hear from you. My work # is 503-378-7002 or 800-873-3246 and my cell is 503-931-0703. My E-Mail address is jbseyb@aol.com Thanks ! Jim Seyler

Steve, Just wanted to thank you for putting together such a great web page on Pre. I remember the Munich games and the race in which Pre put forth such an incredible effort. I wish we could have seen him in Montreal. I was a little disappointed that the film did not show Pre's charitable/social work contributions to society, and curious to know why they showed the accident as possibly being caused by Pre's reaction to another driver's error. Was there any indication that another car was involved in any way in the accident? Thanks again,
Hey Steve!! This site is awesome!!! I love it. My high school cross country and track coach introduced me to Prefontaine 3 years ago and I've been a fan since. I have been trying to find out about his life through various sites, and then, I stumbled upon yours through Runner's World. I was wondering if I would be able to advertise your site on my homepage: www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/4217 Hope to hear from you soon!!!
Hi my name is Scott Slater and I am a high school cross country runner. My first experience of Steve Prefontaine was in the last movie "PREFONTAINE." I was really excited to hear about the new movie, WITHOUT LIMITS,coming out but I've looked everywhere and can't find out when it opens in my city (St. Louis, Missouri). I was hoping mabe you had the inside track and could help me out on this little secret. Please e-mail me back and I'm sure my Kirkwood Cross Country team will be the first ones in line for a ticket. Thank you very much, Scott Slater
Is there any way i can get a copy of mary's book 'pre destiny'? any info would be greatly appreciated. your website is wonderful!! -dawn marie
love your web page. I ran track and cross country for a high school in oregon. Pre died when I was a junior in high school. He came out a few times to run and talk with us. I never made it to the big time but Pre kept me going. I,m always looking for Pre stuff. RunPreRun1@aol.com
I wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your web sites... Thanks for having them. I swam at Florida in the 70's and struggled with the AAU , the 80 Olympic Boycott etc. etc. I enjoyed the movie and remember getting my first pair of waffle shoes for my 18th birthday; I also remember watching the track workouts in Gainesville( what swimmers do for fun) and even remember crying as a 14 year old when they announced at the Junior Olympics that Steve Prefontaine had died. All of you were pioneers in the sport and inspired the whole running boom and mystic... Thanks. Now I live in Boulder Colorado, a former triathlete still swimming and running for fun, every now and again seeing Frank outside. Thanks again, Eney Jones
Dear Mr. Bence, Thank you very much for your great Pre website (which I found linked to the Runners World site). From 1972 to 1975 I lived in Portland while attending law school. Everyone in Oregon was caught up in Pre-mania. I was then a (not very) competitive cyclist (I didn't take up running until after law school, when work and family cut into the training and travel time needed for cycling), and joined a team coached by Chuck Richards, who had gone to Munich as a modern pentathlete, had met Pre, and had talked to him about training methods. Just as people remember exactly where they were when they learned about the Kennedy assassination or the attack on Pearl Harbor, it seems that every athlete over age 40 knows exactly where he was when he learned of Pre's death. I was with other members of my cycling team at the velodrome in Beaverton, warming up for a late afternoon practice session, when Chuck Richards arrived and told us that Pre had died the night before. We didn't train that afternoon. We all just sat in the infield and talked until nightfall. Thanks again, - Rob Sawyer, Santa Paula, CA
Dear Steve, Running is a huge part of my life, some even say an obsession. Seeing that I am a huge running fan it goes without saying that I'm a huge Pre fan as well. However, my knowledge of him was limited, and I could never get any info about the newest movie about him. Iread some info about in a runners world issue a while ago but the release date kept getting changed. Thanks to your website i got the information I needed. Do you have any idea if that movie is coming to Bloomington or Fort Wayne Indiana? While I'm asking questions, do you have any idea where I could get one of the shirts that Grandma Pre was wearing, that was a great shirt. Thank you for your time. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, sincerely indiana.edu
Thanks for the wonderful site. I have been searching for information on "Without Limits", as I had heard it was to be released in April. I was a high school runner in 1975 when Steve Prefontaine died. While my abilities were nowhere near Steve's (1:59 880), I nevertheless patterned my style after his... from the slightly tilted head shown on many pictures, to the front-running style. I can still remember the sadness that came with the news of his death. I hope to attend the 1999 Prefontaine Classic and satisfy an unusual mid-life crisis by running some of his training routes and visiting Skyline Drive. Thanks for all your work.
thanks so much for your web page. it's truly a labor of love, the best reason for the Web to exist. i had the privilege of running on the pre trail, pink house trail, etc., while visiting eugene this summer, and it brought back how much of an effect pre had on me, in my love of running, and even my values (don't quit / keep going / go your own way). i'm older now, and have a job and mortgage etc. but i still run. most of the heroes i had in my youth i now see as just people. i do see pre as a person as well...but he's also a hero still. i'm looking forward to showing your page to my kids.
Wow, your site is great! Simple to navigate, with incredible content. That's too cool that you and Pre were such good friends. If he was alive today, he would be amazed at the loyalty of his buddies. I'm sure you've heard this stuff before, but it really does mean something. You've helped a lot of people to see what running, and friendship are about. Anyway, enough with the sap...I know you guys busted your asses out there on the track and roads. I wish I was alive to come along. Thanks! Rob Thurston
Dear Steve, I am a junior at the HF-L high school in new York. For English class
we have been assigned to write a 10-12 page research paper about anything
in the entire world that interests us. I have decided to do my paper about
Steve Prefontaine. If you have any other information about him that you
would like to share with me, or any other great web sites about him that
I may be
Sincerely,
Dear Bence, I am a 1969 Marshfield High grad. I had the fortunate luck of attending and knowing Steve. He was a guy you knew would be successful. His untimely death in '75 came as a complete shock to me, I was a first year junior high school teacher in Albany and I had just began coaching my first track team. Steve was on my list of contacts to come up and work with my distance runners but it never happened due to the accident. I have a friend also from the class of '69 MHS that was living with Pre at the time of his death who has given me some insight as to how Pre was during those last few weeks. He was an advisor on the first Prefontaine movie. Which I felt did not catch the true spirit of Pre. I hope the next film is better! Anxiously awaiting it, Gene D'Agostini
Hi, I saw you site and thought I would check it out. Its really a great site. I'm a fan of Prefontaine and a runner myself. I was wondering if there was anyway I could get the Sports Illustrated with him featured on the cover from his college days at Oregon. If you can help me that would be great. I also would like maybe a poster or something if you know where I can get one. Your site really is very nice. Thanks.
Can you please tell me the release date of the new Pre- movie. I read a review in Entertainment Weekly and it was given an A+. Thanks Marty "I just want to live happily ever after, every now and then". Jimmy Buffett
Steve: Nice effort on your part to service this site in the fine
manner you have done. I've been following it for awhile now as I
anticipate the release of "Without Limits" in Northern California.
I had to fly up to Portland to see "Prefontaine". In any case,
do you know of a way to
Daryl Katcher
I live in a pretty small town, how can I find out if this movie will be in a theater within at least l00 miles of me?
Hi.... I went up on the web to find some things about Steve when I ran into your site I bought the movie "Prefontaine" this weekend...I bought it because he was my cousin. I didn't have a chance to know him, I was taken aways as a 4 year old, but my sister used to play with him when they were little. My Uncle Roland and Aunt Monna Prefontaine got to go to the Nike opening of the training center dedicated to Steve...they said it was spectacular! My youngest boy, Ryan, who is 9, says he wants to be the next Pre.... he watches the movie with enthusiasm and asks if I think he can beat Pre's records. I just smile, that would be cool if someday he could. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I liked your web site and it gives me a chance to take a look at the man I never knew. Thanks, Alberta Earl
Mr. Bence, I am a student at the University of Oregon and I just viewed your extensive web site about "Pre." I greatly enjoyed it! I have been a track and field fan for many years: Running on the track team in high school in Santa Monica, Calif., watching the events on the Olympics and attending the Prefontaine Classic track meets. I am looking forward to the upcoming release of the new movie and I appreciate your inside stories and experiences with Steve. Thank you again! Sincerely, Nina Huckabay
Great website! I thought you might be interested in one correction: The man identified as Walt McClure in the photo of Prefontaine just after he broke the national two-mile record is actually Phil Pursian, who was an assistant coach at Marshfield High School.
Mr Bence Thank you for your great site! People need winners like Pre to remind them to live there dreams. I was inspired by the courage of Steve to look beyond ordinary life and go for their dreams. Thank you for your site. Best regards John Moseley
I'm a 45 year old lawyer in Monroe, La. who was a middle distance runner at N.L.U. in Monroe from 1971-76 (including a red shirt year). I was never really a Pre fan in college (thought he was too cocky!), but was deeply moved when I rented and watched "Prefontaine." I sat up watching the movie by myself after the rest of the family had gone to bed, and found myself bawling like a baby during the tragic final minutes of the movie. Anyway, I have really grown to appreciate this energetic, enigmatic and magnetic man whose end came so suddenly. I've been trying to find out as much as I can about Pre, and the release date of "Without Limits." I came across your Web Site as an Internet rookie on August 19, 1998. Thanks so much for your efforts and information. I'll surely visit the site again.
Mr. Bence, Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed your website on Steve Prefontaine. Pre was always my hero while growing up. I recall the day of the '72 Olympic 5000 meters. I believe it was a Sunday. We (my family) were at my grandparents' house in Nebraska. I was only eight years old, but I remember like it was yesterday, how awful I felt when he was beaten out of third place at the last second. What a gutty performance though. I became a distance runner in high school largely because of his inspiration. Unfortunately, I was neither as talented nor as tough as he was. I saw the movie "Prefontaine" a couple of months ago. I thought it was a pretty good film, but it was obviously low-budget and I don't recall ever seeing it marketed or publicized in any way. I also can't figure out why they made Frank Shorter's character a 10,000 meter runner and completely failed to mention that he won the gold medal in the marathon. At any rate, I was very happy to find out that another bigger budget film about Prefontaine was coming out. Now I'm in Germany (in the Air Force), so many times I don't get the latest news. Do you have any idea when "Without Limits" is set to be released. Has it been released already? When will it be coming out on video? Finally, I feel a movie about Steve Prefontaine is long overdue. The sport of track and field in our country is, unfortunately, at an all time low. There is plenty of blame to go around. But I would like to see track's administrators and athletes get together and market the sport. Televise more meets. Get people excited about this great sport. It's a shame that world class American runners, jumpers and throwers have to come over here to Europe all the time to compete. Of course not all of the news is bad. Millions of Americans get out and run every day. From a participation standpoint, running is doing very well. Still, people under the age of 30 can't remember and therefore don't realize that there was a time when the United States produced some of the world's greatest distance runners. Many high school kids who have some success at distance running and cross country don't dream of being a world class because, unfortunately, they really have no high profile American runner to look up to. People of our generation could see and read aoburt Jim Ryun, Bill Mills, Bill Rogers, Frank Shorter, Steve Prefontaine and others. Maybe "Without Limits" will inspire someone to greatness. Anyway, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed viewing your website. I look forward to seeing the movie. And, wow, a 1:49.4 half as a college freshman. That's smokin' Paul M. Hughes, SSgt, USAF
Hello- I recently visited your web site about Prefontaine. It was incredible! I am a big fan of Pre. I am from Walport Oregon! I ran at Lane community college in Eugene. I then transfered to SFA in Texas. I run cross country and track. I love running. I would be interested in hearing from you and why you started a site on Pre!
Just happened to stumble on to your site-thank GOD!-I have been searching for information as to the release of Without Limits and you provided me with everything I needed. Thank you for the insight... Drop a line, if you think about it on any new news as to the release date and what not...
I would first like to thank you for assissting in bringing the story of Prefontaine to the public. I've been running for 8 years now and it started when I saw the Prefontaine classic the summer before my freshman year of high school. Every day I have this ritual of touching this poster I have of Pre before I run and I feel it helps give me strength to perservere. I wasn't much in high school, but since then I have qualified for 2 All- marine track teams and 2 cross country teams. Everywhere I go I always take a magazine clipping of Pre. I have cut my PR's drastically since HS including a 15:21 for 5000 and 33:49 for 10,000 meters. I hope to get a college scholarship very soon. Every time I give advice to friends who are beginers I always show them the documentary Fire on the Track and once they have seen that they become Pre fans aswell. I just want my friends to know that he was so much more than a runner and how spectacular his accomplishments really are. Once again thank you for helping bring Pre's image out to the non running
public and I wish you the best of luck.
Hi, My name is Jason. I'm on the Middel Country Cross Country team. I've been running for four years now. Our coach, has used Pre as an example of how to be a great runner. He used Pre's determination and iron will in competition to motivate us. Yet, I never really understood him. I saw the first movie on him. But it didn't show the strength of his running. I've also have seen numerous promotions for another movie "without limits" I was wondering if you know when the release will be? My coach wants us all to see the film together, so we can share our thoughts on him and running. Hopefully this film will be more about the runner he was. It his

Prefontaine lover,
Pre is my god. I am in Eugene right now on a mecca. I ate dinner at Coach Dellinger's house the second night I was here after talking to him at hayward field. I got a tattoo on my left calf muscle saying PRE 5-30-75 RIP. Life isn't better than this anywhere else. Pre is now at rest in my mind. - Missouri
I just got done reading youre website on PRE and thought it was very good. I have read Tom Jordan's book on PRE and also seen the movie ''PREFONTAINE." I ran track in high school and was a 800 meter champion as a junior; so I had heard of PRE when I was running in high school and college. I am amazed at his strength and determination and kind of sad that he did not have a chance to run in another olympics and to do alot more for track and field as well as other things. I look forward to the new movie and was wondering if the documentery that I had heard about called "FIRE ON THE TRACK" is available anywhere. - Washington
Hi Steve, I just found your website. I thought I had seen all the sites on Pre and pleasantly surprised to find yours. I remember you from your days at the U of O. I ran for Redmond (OR) and would hop the bus to Eugene to watch a duel meet. Didn't you have your teeth wired shut and still raced. I remember something about that and you trying to qualify for the NCAA and that someone needed to have wire cutters on hand in case you heaved. I read on one of your e-mails the question about Pre and religion. Jeff Wells (2:10 marathoner and former Athletics West runner) was our minister for a time in Roseburg. He said that while he was pastoring in Eugene he met a youth minister who knew PRE. He related to Jeff that Pre had accepted Jesus Christ in the week or two prior to his death. I was also told in Aug., 1975, while I was at a youth camp outside Springfield, the same story. I hope that it's true. I also read in the emails about a book written by Mary M. about PRE. If this is true, I'd really like a copy. Could you please send me info. on it. I appreciate. It seems that more than not, the good die young. In PRE's case, he still lives on in those young kids who look to him as role model. I appreciate your time and energy on this project. Young kids need models of individuals who wanted to be the best at something--not because of money (e.g. pro athletes). Thanks, Tony Milton
Hi, I just finished watching the movie Prefontaine. I rented it because I love the 70's and I heard it was made by the smae guy who made Hoosiers. Also one of my closest friends was a track/cross country runner, so the subject matter sparked my intrest. I came home and immediately got on line to look him up and I stumbled across a Warner Bros. page. It said it was coming soon, but I culd not find a date. Do you know when it is? Which movie was made by the Hoosiers guy? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me. Steve Prefontaine was an incredible individual and I look forward to reading more about him. Mike
Put more information in... anything that pertains to the movie or the cast... I'm going to be selfish for a moment - do you have any Billy Crudup info to share?? I have a site devoted to him and am always looking for new info... that and pics. Check out my site at http://www.angelfire.com/il/BillyCrudup/ There's a link to my own dinky Without Limits Page, my "Photo Op" page... and your page and blah blah... You have links to interviews yet no interviews. What of that trailer?? Just add more to the site. I dived in expecting a lot more and then I waited...and waited...and - well, here I am! Add more info pertaining to the movie. It's like food... you want more and more and more... net pal, Sofie...><>
Could you visit my site and tell me if the shoes depicted are the Nike Cortez. I saw your old brochure picture on your site and thought you might recognize these. The only problem I have in determining them is that they don't have any tread on the bottom. My comment is abou the movie. I have seen release dates of April 17 (original date), many days in May, June 5, other days in June and now the fall. I think I am going to contact Warner Bros. and ask them. If I get any more info I will let you know. I hope this is a national release because Prefontaine wasn't and I missed it. I have seen ads for it in Running Times for some time now. And I saw the first previews during the Prefontaine Classic on the 31st of May. They should of released it at the same time as that. Anyway, thanks for your time and write back when you can. My son absolutely idolizes Pre.....for his birthday I had wanted to give him a framed poster of Pre but I've not been able to locate a poster anywhere. Do you have any idea who or where I could contact to obtain a poster of him (at the point I would even settle for a movie poster depicting Pre). Any assistance much appreciated. Thanks. Ric Anderson
Do you have an update on the release date for "Without Limits"? Thank you! Bill Byer
Is there a release date for Without Limits? Thanx, Luken Hartlage
I really enjoyed your Pre page. It brought back a lot of memories
for a mediocre runner who has envied you guys for ever! I ran the
880 in High School and jumped on the running boom in 1975. I bought
the book, Pre, and became an instant fan. I kept his pictures on
my apartment wall as inspiration before every days 10 mile run. I
wish that I could have met him. I think that his spirit is with every
runner on every run that they do. Now at 44, I am still running,
although not as successfully as when I was 24. I still feel the need
to run every day. I have been looking for the movie "Without Limits".
Has is been released yet? I understand that
Hi, Do you know when Without Limits is coming out in theaters? I have ads from Runners World magazines and they say "coming to theaters this march". But its way past March! Any info you have on it would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Meggie Smithson

Any idea when or if this movie will be released in the Boston area? Many people are waiting for its release. Thanks- Travis
I recently saw a picture/painting of Pre on someone elses web page. (enclosed) I assume it is an Nike advertisement as their swoosh logo appears in the lower right corner. Do you have any idea where I could get a copy of this? What magazine did it appear in and is it avalible in poster form? I am a cross country coach in Weeping Water, NE and am a big Pre fan. I would love to display this picture in my room.
Steve, I always have been and still am a huge fan and admirer of Steve Prefontaine. I came across your web site and truly enjoyed it. My compliments on your work and the pictures. I have my own story of Pre as do others. I reflect back on that meeting as a turning point for me both as a runner and as a way of how I approach life. Wondering if you happen to know how I can get a copy of the old races that filmed Pre running those AAU races, '72 Olympic Trials, and the whole 5000m final at the '72 Olympic Games? Or, who to contact? Please use my home email address to respond. It is <skjames@ix.netcom.com> Thank you, Shawn K. James
Just wanted to add my two cents to your growing fan club web site of PRE. I am a long time runner and saw Pre run in Baton Rouge in about 1973 or 74. It was at the NCAA college campionships on LSU campus. It was hot as hell and he was still burning up the track. He actually lapped someone, if memory serves me. Loved the newer version of Pre the book. When, if you know, will I be able to see Without Limits in Houston area???????!! Just give me a hint, I will be there!!!!!!!! What a powerful human being he was, he did not beat you, he just smoked
you. I just loved he fire, ambition, his passion for
God Bless Steve Prefontaine!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tom @ TTiger2u@aol.com

Do you know when the movie is coming out? thanks. Jason Loewen
I am a runner at Brown university, and I would like to say how cool this site is. We have a Brown XC homepage and are thinking about making your site a link to it. My friends from the team were also in the stands during the movie.
One of them is a 4:00 miler (4:00.37). I am not at that point
Anyway I just wanted to thank you for making a good site for Prefontaine especially when there are not many of them. Sincerely Dan Kahn
Hello. I was wondering if you knew the date that the movie is supposed to come out. I have been looking all over and can't find anything. Thanks. John Hayes
