Hello. I am a high school distance runner in Topsham, Maine and I’m doing a research paper on Pre.  I was just wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions I have about Pre’s early life and other subjects such as religion or if not, could you please direct me to someone that could. Thanks.

I would appreciate if you could tell me what his average day would have included during high school and in his final years.  Also could you give me some insight as to where he stood religiously.  I was also wondering if Pre's work ethic was as good as it is made out to be and if when he was in high school and running a lot did people think that he was odd because of this.  Thanks again.

[Mary Marckx wrote this response:]  "Steve was not raised in any particular religion, but he did have a sketchy concept of God and was willing to accept the idea of it, although he did not have a strong spiritual side.  He said to me many time, "I wish I had your faith in God."  I don't know why he said this.  I guess because he felt it gave me some kind of grounding that he didn't have, or perhaps solace during difficult times.  He often went to St. Rita's church with my family when he came home with me.  He liked the community feeling, I guess and he always was trying to impress my parents.  It did make my mom happy and he knew it.  So, that's it.  I have one scene in the book where I try to convey this idea of his envy of my religion, but it's not real revealing about his specific beliefs, and frankly I don't think he thought much about God.  Kenny Moore says he always gave the "runners for God" a bit of a hard time, so there you have it."

Regarding Steve's work ethic ... Pre came from a blue collar family.  Pre's mom was concerned that Pre would focus on running too much in college and not prepare himself for a job in life.  Pre believed that his hard work compensated for his lack of talent (although Pre was tremendously talented and worked hard).  Perhaps hard work doesn't describe Pre as much as consistency.  Bill Dellinger claims that Pre never missed a practice ... whether sick, sore, or injured.

Pre lived with me for a few weeks while he was moving.  I hardly saw him.  He would get up early, run, eat breakfast, head out for tons of tasks, meet in the afternoon for a run, eat a quick dinner somewhere, often bounced around with friends or at the bars in the evening, and in bed late (often after I was already asleep).  Then he repeated his day.  He had a lot of energy, had a lot going on, and never missed a run.

Do you know when Without Limits is going to be at movie theaters I heard it was supposed to come out in late March.  What happened to it?

Please write back

Jeff

I like your pre site. Are you a runner? I am a 16 year old distance runner for south newton high school. I run the mile, Steve was a big insperation to me. I never heard of him untill my english teacher gave me the movie poster and then i saw the movei.

I write a column called "Speedplay" for a regional running magazine - Chicago's Amateur Athlete (we've had ads for Without Limits.)

What's up with the release date for Without Limits?  I would like something to put in my next column.

Thank you.

Mike

Have you heard any more about a release date????

Here's the link to my team's website:

http://members.aol.com/XCPRE/index.html

By far the best site I've found on Pre.  Loaded with photos and info on the greatest distance runner and most inspiring human being I've ever known.

Go Pre!!

Now, a favor.  I made the mistake of loaning my copy of "Fire on the Track" to someone and I know it ain't never coming back.  Do you know of a source where I might get another copy of that video.

Thanks,

Wayne

I was wondering when and where is without limits coming out in the movie theatres.

It's been delayed so many times that I have no idea when it's coming out last month it was April 2nd than now May 1st but I couldn't seem to find any theatre which had it in the Massachusetts area.

I'm 17 and I run Cross Country and Distance Track.  I think Steve Prefontaine is about the best thing that ever happened to the sport of distance running, and I know most of his stats and I've got pictures of him all over my room.  I keep telling my family that WITHOUT LIMITS (the new film) will be out any day.  But I can't find anything about it in the newspaper or on the Web.

Can you give me some idea when it will be out?

Thanks,
Matt

I read in Runner's World that "Without Limits" is to be released on May 1st (today).  I am an avid Prefontaine fan and wanted to know if you knew anything.  Prefontaine didn't even come out in the theaters in my state! (Michigan).  I am a college cross country runner and did my term paper on Prefontaine.

I was wondering if you knew if the new movie was only playing in a few places in the United States, or if it was actually coming to Michigan.  It's suppossed to be out today, but I have no idea for sure.

I love your site, it's great!

~Michelle~ :)

I am a high school runner and I get a kick out of old Pre picture if you ever hava any please mail them to me.  I would be most grateful.  Thanks a lot.  I have also heard a lot about your running with Pre.

Thanks again

Hey, Im a freshman at Portland State University, and I run the 1500 on the track team (3:58), That's a great page you made with a lot of sweet pictures. Anyways It's late in our season and I only have one more meet, It's the UofO meet. I have been running 1500's all season and for some reason like in honor of running at Hayward he entered me in the 5000. So Im excited to run well this Saturday. By the way ive always wondered, what did those really early Nike's feel like on your feet? And compared with the shoes today?

Take it easy, Terry

Hello,
I am a 13 year old female and I live in New York. I first found out about the wonderful Steve Prefontain through my XC-Running coach Bernie Gardner. He told us that Pre was the greatest running legend there was, and after I learned about him I had to  agree. I am writing this letter to thank you for putting this web page together. If I could I would go on TV just to tell everyone about Steve Prefontain, unfortunatly I can't.

Thanks a millon,

I'm writing my 11th grade paper on the greatest runner of all time and I was shocked to find that my school had nothing on him.  Not a book with an obsucure reference or even a runners world magiseans.  But on the internet I read all I needed and am righting a great report.  This will show my bastered teacher who said I wouldn't find anything on him.  So to any one with any fact that is not on this thing or one that is fairly unknown please right to

Do you happen to know when Without Limits is coming out?  If so, could you please email me.

Thanks a bunch.

I am a high school runner at Mead High School.

Our head coach, Pat Tyson as most know, was Pre's roomate at the U of O.  He teaches all of us what it takes to be a champion.  I do not know why Mead is one of the best cross country and track teams in the nation, but I believe Tys' leadership, stories, and optimistic attitude contribute to a great team.

Another movie that came out was called "Prefontaine" and is probably in your local Hastings or video shop.  For extras in a race they had about 25 of us runners go over to Seattle and shoot it.  They gave us 5,000 dollars which Tys used to take our varsity to Eugene for the Churchhill Challenge (they finished 1-6 and 8th).  Good page!

I want to commend you on the tremendous site you have put together.

I am a 19 year old college student and I first learned about Prefontaine when I saw the movie "Prefontaine" last year.

I was not overly impressed with the movie but I was so intrigued by the story that the next day I went out and bought Tom Jordan's book on Pre.  I am not a runner, never have been, but I think that Steve Prefontaine can act as an inspiration to all of us.

I thank you for you website.

I found it the other day when I was trying to find out about the new movie "Without Limits" and I was up for 3 hours reading the entire web site.

I really wish that I could have been in the presence of such a competitor like Steve Prefontaine.

I play many sports and I have drawn a great amount of inspiration from reading about Pre.  I am so excited about the movie and it sounds like it could be a great one.  I really hope that people will give it a chance and that it will do well at the box office.

I have two questions to ask.  I am not sure when the move opens up and I can't find any information about when it does so I thought that you might know.  I thought it opened the 17th of April but it was not anywhere I could find.  I can't wait and am looking forward to it whenever it comes out.  I also am wondering if there is any more books about Pre that I could get to read. I have only found Tom Jordan's book and it was very good but I am wondering if there are any more.  If you know of any let me know.

After reading your web site I think that you should write a book on Pre.  You seem to have known him well and you had a lot of good information.  I thank you for providing the information and I hope that more people will look to Steve Prefontaine for inspiration in their lives.

Craig

I can't wait for the new Pre movie!

I saw the first one Prefontaine, I've only recently become interested in running right now.

I'm trainig so I can make my highschool cross country team next year, Prefontaine has really inspired me, and this website has inspired me more-

Dear Steve,

I have just one question for you: can you tell me if and when Without Limits is scheduled to be released in Chicago?

All of the ads said it was coming out in March.  But March is come and gone and now half of April.

Will I have to wait for the video?

Mark

Steve,

I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask you, if you have the time to answer them.

First, can you give me some insight as to the travel permits and the conflict with the AAU.  I have talked to Frank Shorter and he gave me some information, but if you could give me some specific examples of Pre's struggle, maybe one story that I could use.

Second, could you possibly give me a small recap of the Finnish Tour.  Mainly the dates and meets and some background of what Pre had to go through to get the meet going.

If the two questions coincide, that would be great.

I am doing a paper for my history class here at Indiana State University over this subject, and I would appreciate your help.

Thank you very much,

Rick

i loved the page,

the page is great for us distance runners who don't get much credit and for all of the sprinters who say " awww damn it is the 2 mile again"

i think the page is well written and a definate need for the greatest american distance runner of all time.

i am a junior at a public school in denver.  i was actually on the same team as Dominique Calloway her senior year.  she was one of the greatest hurdlers i have ever seen in real life, but i am a 800 runner.  i am glad to see that their is others out their who are distance runners and we get the respect we deserve.

one thing i don't understand is at the simplot games i found an advertisement saying that the movie is going to be out last friday.  our coach made everyone on the team break their plans and us distance guys would see the movie before the meet.  as you can tell we were a little upset, but after long and hard searching for any information i found your page.

thanks for the input.

Do you know when without limits is opening. I heard that it was only going to be in the theatres on the west coast.  Is this true?

      thanks

Aren't they going to release it in May?   That's what I've heard.

I saw the movie "Without Limits" in a special screening in November 98. The movie was great, and I can't wait to see it again!

Steve, have you heard anything further about the premiere at the MacDonald?

Your page mentions the release date being pushed back until fall.  If this is  true, I would think the premiere would be cancelled.

I saw the movie trailer last month when I saw "US Marshals" with my wife.  It's  hard not to get excited.

Keep up the excellent work on your web-page.

Matt

Hello there

Great web site!

I was wondering if you have any idea when and where the movie "Without-Limits" is going to be released? I know it was going to be sometime in April but I have heard nothing since....Would really love to see it.

If you have any information concerning this matter, please write me at

Thank you so much!

I love the way you've updated the Without Limits web site.  Check out my Jim Ryun web site:  www.ryun.com

Hi,

I have been combing the NYTimes online movies, the Post, all local papers. We planned to go see "Without Limits" tonight.

What's happened? Is the message true? September delay?

Thank you for making this website.

Steve Prefontaine has always been an inspiration to me.  I never knew that he died in a car accident, though.  I will definitely be going to see this movie

Thanks again!

I just wanted to say that it was an honor to see your site on the web today.

I am a Pre fan and to have a chance to email you is awesome.  So what were your events in college?

I am not a great runner but I love to learn of others feats..

Steve:

I am an attorney in Kansas City.  I was a lousy (31:00 10K) runner at Kansas State in the mid-80's.  I've got an interesting piece of Pre memorabilia I thought you might be interested in.

I collect memorabilia related to track and particularly U.S. distance runners.  Both of my old coaches at K-State, Steve Miller and John Capriotti, ended up at Nike.  A couple of years ago, I was talking to Capriotti to get a Salazar autograph to add to the collection. John was working in the same area with Alberto at that time. He asked if there was anybody else I wanted, and as a joke I said Pre.  To make a long story short, a few weeks later, a package from John arrived, and it contained a letter written by Pre.

The date is November 29.  He left the year off, but it had to be 1974.

The letter is to Jaako Tuominen in Finland and it is one the letters Pre wrote to set up the Finnish tour.  He talks about only being able to get about $250-300 per meet in money for the athletes, some of the dates and a number of other things.  It is a great piece of U.S. track history, given eveything surrounding that meet series, including his death.  I have it framed along with a copy of his SI cover.

I can't imagine I would ever sell it, but I thought you might be interested in knowing that it exists and that there are lot of us out
here that realize the impact Pre had on our sport in so many different ways.

Can't wait for the movie to hit K.C.!

Thank you for the great tribute to Steve Prefontaine!

I'm just getting ready to meet my team for our Sunday run of ten miles along the trails of Lake Crescent a few miles west of Port Angeles.

I have a special story when it comes to Pre.

As a high school runner, I always wondered why this team from Mead High School in Spokane, Washington was kicking everybody's butts in meets.  They won 9 state titles in a row and always seemed to have runners under 9 minutes for the 3200 and around 4:05 for the 1600.

I got my answer when I was assigned to student teach under Pat Tyson at Mead High School.  Pat is the best high school coach in the nation.  He was Pre's college roommate at Oregon and keeps the tradition of Oregon training and Pre alive.  The kids used Pre as their inspiration and as an example of how training hard get results.  Pat makes t-shirts with Pre on the front and gives
them to kids who trained all winter to get ready for track.  It never fails when I'm out and about that a person will stop me and ask me about Mead and Pre if I'm wearing one of Pat's t-shirts.  I not only learned the art of teaching from Pat, but fell in love with coaching and running. We ran on trails together as a group, fought hard in track workouts and celebrated life as distance runners.  I learned so much from Pat about motivation and success and working with kids.  He is one of my best friends.

I have been teaching now for three years in Port Angeles, Washington.  I help start a cross country and track program as well as a club team for middle school kids.  We train using the Oregon system, and Pre is our hero and example of excellence.  It is my hope that I can coach at the high school next year and apply what I learned from Tyson to the program.

Take care and enjoy the thrill of running.

I love the way you've updated the Without Limits web site.  Check out my Jim Ryun web site:  www.ryun.com

Hi there!  I just checked out your website in anticipation of the movie and I really enjoyed it.  It also helps get me a bit more psyched up for tomorrow's Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC which I will be doing for the first time.

As the webmaster for the Howard County Striders (http://www.onlinesol.com/online/striders) I thought that it would be really cool if you could add a link to us as a regional running club on the PRE website links page.  I'm sure our 1200+ members would really get a "kick" out of that.  The HCS's are based in Columbia, MD and are Central MD's largest running club.    Thanks for your consideration.

Steve,

Your web-site is very motivating and I would just like to thank you for the time and effort that you put into this site. The information in this site is very interesting, especially the info about Mary's book. I am very interested in buying a copy of the manuscript and any information you could sent me would be appreciated.

I am a runner who has competed at the college level, and I am always looking for things to use as motivation and I constantly look to PRE for word of inspiration. The book PRE gave me good insight on Steves life, and now I am hoping that Without Limits will show more on the Man, Myth, and Legend.

Please let me know about when the movie will be released.

Thanks for a great page on the movie that I most want to see this summer (or whenever it is released).

I am originally from Oregon, but now run in college outside of Boston MA.

I am a HUGE Pre fan.  I have been to the Prefontaine Track Meet a few times and have read Tom Jordan's book about ten times, and will lend it to anyone who wants to read it.

I was born just less than three years after his death (20 days to be exact), so I never saw him run, which kind of stinks.  I have, of course, seen the video clips of a few races which send shivers down my spine as does much of Tom Jordan's book.

I also have about fifteen or twenty quotes of Pre's (and about thirty of other runners) hung around my room.   I would like to be put on the list of people who want to be notified when Marry Marcks's book is available.

Steve Prefontaine's inspiration still lives on today. I was too young to know who Steve Prefontaine was during his time, I wish I had, but I feel as a runner I know how he must have felt during some of his races!

In February of  l996, shortly before leaving for Las Vegas to try my fifth attempt at qualifying for the Boston Marathon, I went to see the movie about Steve Prefontaine. I remember leaving the movie theater that night feeling like I could do anything!! As I boarded the bus to the starting line the morning of the Las Vegas marathon, I turned to my husband and said, "Do I look like a runner?" We both smiled and 26.2 miles later I was on my way to Boston!!!

Thank You for sharing Steve's life, it did and forever will touch my life!

Seattle, WA

Thank you for the pre site.

I enjoyed it and printed some of it out, for my sons.  Both of them run for their schools and any Pre info is inspirational to them.

My husband, sons and I all run and will enjoy your work

I have a brother-in-law that ran in college and still runs. He looks just like Pre and is in his 40's now. some of his old pictures are amazing how much they looked alike.  Once in awhile when he races, I'll yell out--GO PRE-- and he smiles.

I really enjoyed the site

If you get anymore information can you please E-mail it to me?

Thanks a lot.

Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm glad you liked the story.  I'd be honored if you want to pass it on to Bill Dellinger.  He made one high school kid very happy that day

Steve,

I've just finished reading every word on your Pre site.  Great job!

It's really interesting to see the perspective of someone who was Pre's friend and trained with him.

I guess you are getting lots of stories via email about what Pre meant to different people.  I can't resist adding mine, so I hope you don't mind.  I was 3 years younger than Pre and just starting track and x-c in HS in Virginia when he was starting at UO.  On a ark, I wrote him a gee-whiz fan letter in 1969 or '70, and was flabbergasted when I got a handwritten reply from him.  We xchanged another couple of letters, and in each case he patiently answered my dumb questions.  My dad took me to the 1970 NCAA X-C meet at William & Mary, which Pre won (his first of three NCAA X-C championships, as you no doubt know).  I was sort of  hanging around gawking at the Oregon team as they were putting their sweats on after the race.  Maybe I was even gawking at you!  Anyway, Bill Dellinger noticed me standing around and walked over toward me.  I thought he was going to tell me to get away and leave his team alone, but instead he handed me something and said, "Here, kid.  This is the number Pre was wearing."  I still have that, along with the letters Pre wrote.

Once again - great job on the site.

I am a huge fan of Steve Prefontaine.  I am now a high school runner and I find his life story so inspirational.   Ever since I first heard his story about four years ago he has been my hero and greatest inspiration.  I first heard of him through Nike's "Fire On The Track-The Steve Prefontaine Story."   I found that a lot better then the movie released a year ago "Pre."  I would really be interested in getting a copy of Nike's movie...if you have any info on how I could purchase a copy please e-mail me.  I am very impressed by your web page.  I think you did an excellant job and I want you to know how much it inspired me.   Noone will ever STOP PRE!!!!

        Thanks for your time

Sincerely,

High School Runner,

I just want to say that I really enjoyed your web site.  It is the best I have ever seen on Pre.  I have become a huge fan of Pre since I took up running about four years ago.  I was wondering if you knew of anywhere I could get some Go Pre t-shirt for my college Cross Country team.  Again, it was great to read over your web site.

Thanks.

I was also wondering if Pre's work ethic was as good as it is made out to be and if when he was in high school and running a lot did people think that he was odd because of this.  Also for quoting purposes I would appreciate some information about yourself.

Thanks again.

Hi!

I just love your site on Pre.  I am a high school track and cross country runner, and have come to idolize Pre.  Although I was not even born yet at his time, I know what a great person Pre was.  I have read all the info I can possibly find on him, and have loved all of it.  The only thing is I can't find any posters or pictures of Pre to buy or order.  I was wondering if you knew of anywhere I could do this?  I would really appreciate your response. Also, is the book by Mary going to be released anytime?

Thanks a lot!!!

Hello,

I am a high school distance runner in Topsham, Maine and I’m doing  a research paper on Pre.  I was just wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions I have about Pre’s early life and other subjects such as religion or if not, could you please direct me to someone that could

Thanks

Steve, I truly enjoyed the presentation you made on the Web!  As a kid growing up Pre was my hero - I graduated high school in 74 with an outstanding career in track and cross country - I only set a school record in the 880, but I really ran well for a person, who, like Pre, didn't have much if any natural ability.  It was his determination that set him apart and made him what he was. Your wife should give you a break...a 1:49 half mile as a freshman is outstanding and I was glad to see a picture of you along with all the other great photos you had in this publication.  Do you still run? I run in road races and can place in my age group, but am still no running star, but then again, there are only a few of them around - it's always easy to find someone faster. These days, as in the days of old, the camaraderie, the sharing of the running/racing experience seem to be why I continue running.  Again, I really enjoyed it -you did a wonderful job. Maybe you can get your wife to check it out and show you the typos - since I read every word I'll tell you that I found at least 5. Sincerely, Paul Serra  Co-captain of William & Mary Track Team 1978

I just heard that the Without Limits release has been delayed.  Is that true?

Note:  I was told that the movie has been moved back to the fall ... possibly a September release.  The word is that the movie is getting great reviews and there

Mr. Bence,

Not that I would ever sell it but do you have any idea how much a GO PRE poster put out by Track & Field News depicting Steve Prefontaine in the 72 Oly trial at Eugene would be worth.  Tracy Smith is off of Pre's left shoulder. My copy is framed and in pristine condition.  Pre is wearing Adidas spikes!!!

Thank you for your time.

I am a distance runner for Linfield College in McMinnville, OR.  I am a huge "Pre" fan and would love nothing more to be able to obtain a copy of the unpublished manuscript that I found under a Prefontaine web page.  Please e-mail me back with the price
and the address where I need to send money to.  I am very excited about this and can not wait to begin reading it.

Thank you very much,

Steve,

We mailed back and forth in November when I had seen he movie here in New York.

Are there going to be any type of special showings?  I coach a high school team and I'm sure some of my girls would love to go to some sort of special preview as well as seeing it in our local theaters

The web site is really enjoyable.

I'm just wondering if you are the man in my book "PRE" . If so you must have been one of Steve's team mates so if you could E-mail me I would be highly grateful.

I would be interested in purchasing the book written by Mary Marckx.  I am a runner at U.C. Davis.  Please send me info on the book or original manuscript.  Thank you.

Do you have any knowledge on what movie or movies would be featuring the "Without Limits" trailer?  I assume it would be a Warner Brothers Film.  Thanks for you your help.

I am interested in purchasing a copy or two of the book Pre Destined.  How can this be done?

Dear Steve:

Someone posted your web site to t&fdarkwing. I've just checked it out.

I too, would like a copy of Mary's book or a copy of the manuscript.

Thanks for putting your web site together. A labor of love to be sure.

Great job on the page it was enjoyable to see new Pre information and pictures I had not seen before.

Could you please send me information on the book by Mary Marckx.  Depending on the price I may be interested in getting a copy of the manuscript.

Great web site on Pre & the money.

I saw a preview of the movie at the Junior Olympic Nationals in Portland back in December.

What does a copy of Mary's book cost?

I love your web site!!  Can't wait to see "Without Limits".

Did you happen to see Tom Cruise on "Rosie" ??  My wife said they talked about the movie a little.

I wanted to compliment you on such an amazing web page devoted to Prefontaine.  I particularly enjoyed your mixing of actual pictures with shots from the movie.  The movie "Without Limits" is also special to me as I was one of the running extras during the Oregon v. Stanford, and Restoration meets.  The highlight of my week of filming was having the chance to speak with Kenny Moore for about 30 minutes.  Listening to him tell a funny story about Pre during the 72 Olympics was a neat experience.

Apparently the movie is due out in April.  I'm real interested to see if my face shows up on the screen or if I'm on the cutting room floor.  From looking at the your web page, it looks as though you, your wife, and your daughter were in the crowd on the days that I was running.  I'd be interested to see if you have any more pictures.

Keep up the good work.

Steve,

I would dearly love to purchase a copy of Mary's book.  I've been waiting to see it since Kim Spir talked about it last fall.  Any info you could give me would be much appreciated.

A HUGE PRE FAN FOR LIFE,

ps  aren't you the guy that Pre said spoke pretty good English for a Spaniard?

Got a kick spending an hour and reading all the stuff on Pre, looking forward to the movie.

Hope it does better than the 1st "Pre" movie.  I live in the SF Bay Area and went to it on opening night and there were only about a dozen other folks there, and I knew half of them (runners).

An e-mail from my sister-in-law to my wife:

I enjoyed Steve's web site --  "shameless self-promotion" or not. I think he's had over 2,500 visitors by now.

I just wanted to say you have an great site!!!

I run high school track in New York and just wanted to know a little more about Steve Prefontaine... and its even better when it comes from someone who knew him  :)

Just wanted to tell you that  ...  thanx a lot!!

Steve:

Absolutely tremendous!  I just checked your site.  It looks great.  I especially liked the movie-line chronology and the comparative photos.

Explaining how the film interprets history and where it takes poetic license is informative for those who don't know how
movies are made. The heck with "self-promotion", your personal asides are what make the site come alive.

Have you spread the word about the site? When did it come online? How did you manage to pull it all together? Is WB involved? How long did it take to construct?

I'm going to call as many people as possible to check it out.

I am very, very interested in purchasing this book, or a manuscript copy ... I am also curious if this book will include some personal photo's ... I would appreciate copy's with the book if possible ... (xerox color) ... write me back with the price, and details, and I'll pop a check in the mail.

My Uncle remembers you from UO ... he ran at ASU ... said you guys ran the 880 against each other 3-4 times.

Dear Steve,

Your web site is incredible.  It is the best site I've ever seen.  Period.

I am also embarrassed to say I had forgotten (or never knew) a lot of the information regarding your history particularly involving the summer in Europe.

Congratulations on your site.

In what main ways will the Warner Bros. movie differ from the Disney-Hollywood Pictures version of last year?

I thought the first movie was excellent and I am interested to see how Warner Bros. will elaborate on it.  Also, when is the new movie going to be released?

Steve,

It was a big surprise and pleasure when I came upon your Web site. I thought "there is a name from the past."  Though I have never met you, I use to read about you and your Oregon teammates regularly when I was running high school track in New York in the early '70s. The last time I saw your name was in Kenny Moore's Sports Illustrated article in 1975

Like many others, I have admired and been intrigued by Pre and appreciate it when people like yourself who have known and run with Pre share their stories.  For the last 11 years I have been friends with Steve's parents, Ray and Elfriede, and visited with them last fall. I always find it interesting hearing the different stories about Steve from them and others who knew him.

In your Web site you mention that Mary Marckx has written a book about Pre. I would very much be interested in purchasing a copy of it. I would appreciate it if you could let me know how I might do so.

Since you were at the filming of "Without Limits" I was wondering if you still run and live in the Eugene area and are involved with the movie?

Thanks again for sharing your information and I look forward to hearing back from you.

I loved your page, it's very very nice.  Could you do me a favor and go to:

  http://members.aol.com/bhsrunner/cc.html

I'd just like for you to see it.

I am interested in Mary's manuscript. Let me know what I need to do to get one.

Steve Bence,

I loved your site and all your info on Pre! and the new Movie. Can't wait to see it.

You had some stuff I had never seen before, it was great!

I would be very interested in reading Mary Marckx's book. It would be nice to get another insight into Pre.

The early Nike stuff was also great. I collect all that stuff and it was great to read what you guys said in your logs.

I ran my P.R. for 1500 in Eugene at an all-comers meet (3.43.7) while my brother Rich ( 3.51.3 mile) was living there. What a place!!!!!!!

Thanks Again,

Stay Fit and Stay Healthy

Mr. Bence,

I am very interested in purchasing a copy of Mary's book on Pre.  Please give me the ordering info.

By the way, you have done a real good job on your web page.  I don't even remember how I stumbled on it, I think it was a link from Runner's World or Trackwire.

I have been a Pre fan ever since I took up the sport 15 years ago (I am now 30).

I forced my girlfriend to drive with me through a blizzard for over an hour last February to see the other Pre Movie on the night it opened.  There were only four other people in the theater ...

It was ok, but from everything I've read, this one will be much better.  I know that the budget for this one's about 5 times what the budget for the other one was.

Steve,

You were quite svelte as a frosh!!!!  Look out for stalkers from the internet.

Mr. Bence,

I am a high school junior who participates in cross-country and track.   Pre is my idol!!  I have seen the movie twice, read the book numerous times, and visit the web site almost daily.

I really hope this movie does well and that it would open a lot of  people's eyes about running and maybe even get another "running boom" started.

Your site is perfect for the movie, and hopefully the "official" movie page has a link to yours.  I found some of the preview quotes from different magazines to be humorous.  I have Tom Jordan's book, read numerous old newspaper articles, the Pre Documentary, and talked to some of his friends, but your site has more information on his personal life than all other forms of material I've seen.

Visually, the site is well organized.  Even though it's not really a competition, it's better than other Pre sites.  It appeals to the movie viewer, and has plenty of inside information for the true fans.

Steve:

I really enjoyed looking over your web page.  I just finished reading the book "Pre" and have really gotten interested in running from the early 70's.  I am a runner myself.  I just ran the Houston Marathon, my 6th marathon.  I am definitely a middle of the pack runner, but it is a major part of my life.  Runners, such as yourself were an inspiration for me when I was in high school.

Do you know why it has taken so long for the release of the Movie, Without Limits?  Wasn't it supposed to be released around a year ago?  I saw the movie, Prefontaine, and enjoyed it, but I have read that this one is much better.  There is such a lack of movies dealing with running, that it is great to see movies dealing with the sport.

Thanks again!!

Steve

What a nice surprise to find your site today through Runners' World Online.  My 15-yr-old son is a huge Pre fan and I know he'll enjoy the site.

Best wishes,

I'd be interested in purchasing a copy of Mary Marckx's book. Is it available at this time in unpublished form?

Picked up on your link off of RW Daily... thanks, wonderful stuff.

I am a bit younger than you but that put me in a good position to hold you all as running heroes.

I have a question for you if you'd be so kind:  I just watched the Disney video release Prefontaine yesterday with a running friend.  I look forward to viewing this next one, also.  What impact has it had on the actual quality of the film(s) to have these two large production companies, each with their own set of outside experts, presumably all researching the same material and talking to the same inside experts?

Regards,

I would like a copy of the Pre book by Mary.  Email me back as to how I could get one.

The book of Pre by Mary Marckx sounds good. I'm interested in a copy.
